Miley Cyrus is a Disney Star turned celebrity turned wild twerker turned music icon. Even if you don’t know any of her music, you’ve heard of Miley Cyrus. She rose to stardom playing a double life on Hannah Montana, and as she matured and left the Disney childhood era behind, she stepped into the limelight with little care about what people think.
Throughout her crazy career, she has twerked on stage, come out as pansexual, and pole danced on the Teen Choice Awards. Fans and celebrities have had a lot to say about the actress/singer, and we’re here to break it down.
Miley has feuded with prominent names throughout her famous career, including Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, Nick Minaj, Taylor Momsen, and Jodie Sweetin. As opposed to letting the words get the best of her, she sees celebrities talking about her as a sign of someone who “has made it.”
She believes that if celebrities have something to say about her behavior, music, etc., that means that she’s important enough to be talked about. Miley also didn’t always stay silent when people spoke out against her. She was more than willing to stand up to the haters.
Unlike many of the haters, Taylor enjoyed Miley’s performance at the 2013 MTV VMA Awards. She cheered her on for putting on a brave performance. It was only a couple of years later that their friendship fell apart. At this time, Taylor was killing it in the industry, having recently released her album, 1989.
She posted numerous pictures on Instagram of her friends, her life on tour, and her current whereabouts. Miley Cyrus didn’t identify with Taylor’s lifestyle at the time and said that she was not part of her “Squad.” She preferred surrounding herself with people who had “real lives.”
Double standards in the celebrity world is something Miley spoke out against. After Swift’s Taylor’s “Bad Blood” music video came out, Miley didn’t get why everyone was making such a big deal about how she was portraying herself.
“I don’t get the violence revenge thing,” said Cyrus Miley. She didn’t see the video as setting a positive example to the public and highlighted how people speaking out against her “t*tties” being out is just not cool. Miley liked a photo poking fun at Taylor, which was posted on Instagram in 2018 that compared her to pop queen Britney Spears.
In her comment, she wrote, “To celebrate, will you top like Taylor? Or twerk like Miley?” during International Women’s Day. Neither singer has spoken out against the other the last couple of years. The two influential female stars continue to make music that people adore, and their careers are escalating.
Maybe one day, they can forget all that useless nonsense and become friends again. Only time will tell; perhaps they’ll even work creatively once more to showcase their talent together. For now, it doesn’t seem like they’re too friendly and are in no rush to reconnect.
This all happened in 2015 when the MTV VMA nominations came out, and Nicki wasn’t happy with their decisions. She spoke out against how her video should have been nominated, considering how it broke the internet.
“When the ‘other’ girls drop a video that breaks records and impacts culture, they get the nomination.” Said, Minaj. Minaj didn’t see it as fair that Swift’s “Bad Blood” video was nominated over her own. She wasn’t directing her frustration at Miley but, Miley had a lot to say about her reaction.
She called Minaj “not too kind” and thought there was no point in pinning successful women against each other. The moment that confirmed the two were feuding was after Nicki went up on stage to accept her award for the best hip-hop video.
She took her chance to address Miley and said, “Back to this b*tch that had a lot to say about me the other day in the press.” Miley brushed the comments off, reminded her how the press mischaracterized words and congratulated her.
For just about four years, no drama was seen or heard between the rapper and singer. However, in 2019, Miley’s single “Cattitude” came out where one of the lyrics said, “I love you Nicki, but I listen to Cardi.”
This probably was a poor choice by Miley as Nicki was literally feuding with Cardi. Since then, no one really knows if the two female music industry giants are still feuding, but there are no hints about becoming friends or anything of that nature.
Words really do have meaning, as Miley took to heart what Perry wrote about her. Let’s take it back to Feb 22nd, 2014, when Miley performed at Staples Center as part of her Bangerz tour. Perry was in the front row, and Miley spotted her.
She leaned in for a kiss that was just a little too much for Perry. She figured it would be an elegant “girly” kiss, but Miley went in heavier than expected. Perry recalled, “And then she like tried to move her head and go deeper, and I pulled away.”
Perry took to Twitter to criticize Cyrus: “God knows where that tongue has been.” However, Miley clapped back, taking a stab at her ex-boyfriend John Mayer, letting her know that his tongue has been in some unknown places. She was referencing his previous relationships with other female celebrities.
Miley added more fuel to the fire after she posted a picture of a kiss emphasizing how there is no way that Perry didn’t love the intimate exchange. Perry never responded to the post; maybe she got busy with touring for her hits “Roar” and “Dark Horse.”
Anyone who is a fan of Cher knows that she holds herself to a high standard but is not shy to give her opinion. She thought her performance wasn’t good in any regard, “I’m not old-fashioned; she could have come out naked, and if she’d just rocked the house.”
She didn’t hate that provocative and free-spirited performance Miley put on stage as much as it was poorly done. She criticized her dancing, the way she looked, and the fact that she shouldn’t have stuck out her tongue because it had something on it.
Miley wasn’t surprised about people making comments about her; at this point, she was already used to the trash talk. However, when Cher shared her opinion on Twitter, Miley finally felt like she was a name to remember.
She realized that if someone as famous as Cher was investing her time to speak about her, that means that her career was at a whole new level. She recalled how Cher was angry that she stuck her tongue out, and she responded with, “Yo, I pissed Cher off, I really made it.”
It’s like that saying goes, choose your battles. Well, Miley chose carefully. Taylor Momsen otherwise remembered as Jenny from Gossip Girl, spoke out against Miley’s music after they were compared because they fell in the same age range.
Apparently, Momsen was also up for the part of Hannah Montana but was actually happy with the way things turned out because it allowed her to put an emphasis on her music and band, The Pretty Reckless. However, she never made it to Miley’s level.
Momsen had a lot to say about the Miley, and it came out a little aggressive “I’m not looking to be Miley f**king Cyrus. I don’t care about the fame.” She emphasized that she wasn’t personally attacking Miley.
“I do think the Disney bubblegum sh** the world is living right now is pathetic,” said Momsen. She also mentioned that she was not personally acquainted, but the comparison of the two due to their age was not justifiable on her terms. Miley never responded to the comments.
In 2016, Miley posted a picture of Sweetin on Instagram of her partying with her ex-husband Cody Herpin in 2007. Sweetin was sitting on his lap, holding a cigarette in her hand. She captioned the post “Current Mood #fullerhouse.”
It was an interesting choice to post, considering it referenced a time when Sweetin was struggling with drug addiction and since has been five years sober and a mom of two. I mean, she could have picked any throwback picture from the original “Full House.”
Sweetin made the decision not to let the post get to her and start a feud. She spoke about how she had enough positivity in her life and tried not to pay attention to any negative comments.
She certainly has a reason to focus on the good things in life. Her career has taken new heights starring in “Fuller House” and taking part in “Dancing with the Stars.” Good on her for avoiding any unnecessary drama in her life and moving on.
Being a Disney at such a young age came with a lot of pressure and responsibility. Miley had to maintain that “perfect role model” image for all her young girl fans and keep Hanna Montana the perfect pop star.
She recalled being young and wearing a lot of makeup and a wig to maintain an image that wasn’t even a reflection of who she was. Once she stopped making the show, it took her some time to realize who she was, indicated by her rebellious behavior.
Cyrus dated a massive Disney star when she was very young. She went out with Nick Jonas for about two years before the couple called it quits. Following the breakup, she decided to transform the way she looked completely.
She recalled that Nick wanted her to have highlights when they were dating, and so she did. After they broke up, however, she wanted to do something that felt more like her, and she dyed her hair black. She recalled saying, “I don’t want to look pretty; I want to look hardcore.”
Miley continued her incredible career into the making of the Last Song. Miley was acquainted with Liam Hemsworth as he played her love interest in the movie in 2009. She shared that one of the reasons she fell in love with him was because he respected her for who she was.
She also admired him for the hard-working ethic that she shared. At the time, Miley wasn’t as big of a name in Australia (Hemsworth’s home country) as she was in the US. They officially came out as a couple after appearing together on the red carpet in 2010.
The couple dated on and off for a year until 2011. However, things took a more serious direction after Miley’s “I Can’t Be Tamed” song came out. Hemsworth finally proposed to her in 2012 with a massive 3.5-carat engagement ring.
The couple was together for 10 years before ending their marriage. She recalled that when she was 19, she was in a different stage in her life and shared, “I was so scared of being alone.” It was only after a decade that she realized she wanted to conquer this fear finally.
No one could forget her near-naked performance at the VMA’s. The almost nude performance caught the attention of many people and celebrities and was probably one of the year’s highlights. Sticking out her tongue and holding the foam finger wasn’t the only thing that caught people’s attention.
It was the fact that she dared to do something so provocative and unexpected. The show gave Miley a massive career boost, and so she decided to use her newfound platform to do something impactful.
Miley was going through a complete transformation at the time. It was 2010, and this was just before her 18th birthday. “I Can’t Be Tamed” had recently come out. The album was not only hugely successful but portrayed Miley’s ‘don’t care’ attitude.
Not long after becoming an official adult, someone caught footage of Miley doing a salvia bong hit. The drug is known for its hallucination effects and moving into a psychedelic state of mind. Someone outside of Miley’s circle seems to have gotten ahold of the footage.
In 2014, Miley had received a nomination for Video of the Year for her hit, “Wrecking Ball.” Miley decided to use her reach and influence to spread some much-needed awareness. As a result, she decided to let a homeless man by Jesse Helt accept her award.
His speech brought her to tears reflecting on the massive issue of youth homelessness. However, all that good effort backfired when his criminal record was released, displaying that he was arrested in the past and was recently in prison for six months.
The year was 2008, and Miley was just 15 years old. She had done a photoshoot with photographer Annie Leibovitz for Vanity Fair. However, in the pictures, she appeared half-naked, revealing her bareback.
Although a sheet covered the rest of her body, the photo was considered too scandalous for a famous girl playing Hannah Montana. Not long after the pictures were released, Miley apologized, noting that she was “embarrassed” and that the resulting stew by fans wasn’t her intention.
When you are as big of a star as Miley Cyrus, you must be careful not to take pictures that might offend people. In 2009, she took a picture “slanting her eye” that was found prejudiced against Asians.
Miley spoke out against the comments as her intentions weren’t to poke fun at any ethnicity and that she was simply putting on a goofy face. It looks like her comments weren’t taken lightly, and she ended up apologizing for having taken the photo.
2009 was when Miley was trying to steer away from her Hannah Montana image and rebel against the sweet and innocent girl from Disney. This was evident when she performed “Party in the USA” at the Teen Choice Awards.
As she came out onto the stage, she wore cowboy boots with booty shorts and a tank top. This was considered inappropriate for the time and her age (16), combined with her provocative dancing. The cherry on top was when she danced on a pole connected to an ice cream cart.
At this point, no one could stop Miley from doing whatever the heck she wanted. This was seen throughout her various music videos, including her smash hit, “We Can’t Stop.” There we see Miley twerking, skinny dipping, and dancing in a sheer leotard.
One of the biggest criticisms of the music video was that she was hinting at “black” culture. She put on a gold grill and displayed a scene where a guy is eating dollar bills. The overall bizarre and random additions to the video caused an uproar.
Once again, Miley puts out another music video that shocks the world. This time, she is sitting completely naked on a wrecking ball and licking a sledgehammer. As years have gone by, Miley has preferred to put this music video behind her.
It’s hard for people to forget this chapter in her career. She doesn’t love performing the song for audiences, but it seems like she does anyway because it is a fan favorite. She even recalled that she will “always be the naked girl on a wrecking ball.”
In 2008, Miley was the Queen of Disney when Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato joined. Selena and Demi were best friends who made their premiere appearances, Demi on Camp Rock and Selena on Hannah Montana.
At the time, the two best friends were making funny YouTube Videos. Miley and a fellow dancer /friend, Mandy Jiroux, also posted a vlog making fun of Demi and Selena. Miley later revealed that they were only joking and were showing support. In the end, she apologized, and the video was taken down.
At this point, Miley has so many tattoos that you probably couldn’t count them all. However, her first tattoo caused a lot of noise because she was under the age of 18 when she got it and because she got it in a place that people deemed inappropriate.
The tattoo was “Just Breathe,” placed below her left breast. She got it to commemorate her grandfather and friend Vanessa who lost the natural ability to breathe. The placement was meant to keep them close to her heart.
Environmental activists and ecological preservation organizations were unhappy when she posted a picture of herself sitting on top of a significant tree. It was known to be protected as part of the Mojave Desert ecosystem.
She was just about to release her album. “She is Coming” and had recently married Liam Hemsworth (in 2019). Miley didn’t respond to the comments, but she did take down the photos from Instagram, which was probably a clear message that she had to gauge the criticism.
The internet went nuts when Miley dressed up as famous rapper Lil Kim for Halloween in 2013. She wore a mermaid jumpsuit with only one sleeve and a purple wig. What caught people’s attention was that just like Lil Kim, she covered her left nipple with a pastie (a garment used to cover it up)
At this point, no one could say Miley was the Disney star. At the 2013 MTV EMA’s, she strutted on stage with a joint in her mouth. Regardless of what people thought, she said, “Sometimes in life, you just got to decide not to give AF.”
Some time had passed since her album Bangerz came out, and Miley took it down a notch. The year was 2017, and she came out with her album Malibu, which displayed the classic country feel she was first known for.
She still, however, managed to say some things to make people mad. She dissed rap and hip hop, labeling it flashy and misogynistic. However, she emphasized the genre to boost her career at one point in her career, which caused people to label her a hypocrite.
Abortion has been a hot topic for a long time, and if someone as famous as Miley Cyrus is going to say something, people will listen. Miley’s opinion was crystal clear when she posted a picture on Instagram licking a cake that wrote: “Abortion is Healthcare.”
Opinions were split, some supporting the post favoring women’s rights, while conservatives spoke out against the ordeal. Setting politics aside, a baker who made the original design called the pop star out to steal her design.
Considering her big name in pop music, it is shocking to hear that Miley Cyrus wasn’t her given name. Her famous father, Billy Ray Cyrus, and mother Tish originally named her Destiny Hope Cyrus.
The tale goes that Miley was always smiling, so her parents gave her the nickname “Smiley.” Eventually, this was changed to Miley, and she officially made it her legal name in 2008. Could you imagine someone named Destiny Hope dancing on a wrecking ball or holding the foam finger at the VMA’s?
Sitting alongside Alicia Keys, Adam Levine, and Blake Shelton, Miley joined the season 11 season judges of The Voice. She wasn’t a true rookie judge to the show as in the previous season, and she appeared as a prominent advisor.
However, what was truly remembered from her time on The Voice was that a team member had passed away due to a challenging battle with pneumonia. Miley spoke at her funeral as the two had become close on the show. “She taught me everything I know about Love,” said Cyrus.
DaBaby, a rising rap star, was hammered by his array of homophobic comments, and Miley Cyrus was there to lend a helping hand. She messaged the rapper on Instagram, offering to provide resources about the LGBTQ+ community.
Instead of focusing on the actual comments he made, she noted that the internet could be a place that promotes “conversation, communication, & connection” instead of cancel culture. That progress can be made if people are willing to be open-minded and learn.
On June 24th, 2021Britney Spears gave a speech regarding her abusive treatment under her conservatorship. Her speech was compared to an episode of Black Mirror where Miley Cyrus plays a pop star under the control of her aunt.
Her character’s experience is more or less in line with Britney’s reality as Ashley (the character’s name) is forced to perform constantly, and her life is managed under a team. She is also forced to take medication if she resists anything she is told to do.
Fans who have followed the pop star over the years know that she is not afraid of taking on new challenges. Cyrus loves outdoor activities and sports, including hiking, kayaking, and yoga. In late June 2021, she posted a video of herself on Instagram trying to wakeboard.
She fell flat on her face, which most people probably would do if they were beginners of the sport. It is considered one of the most challenging water sports among surfing and water skiing because it uses the entire body and demands strength & balance.
After divorcing Liam Hemsworth, Cyrus began dating Australian singer Cody Simpson. The couple eventually broke up as well, and Cody shared a look back at their relationship together. “It was just one of those phases you go through…” said Cody.
Miley also reflected on the relationship, saying that it was time for them to work individually and go their separate ways. They were long-time friends before they began dating and remain, “We’ve been friends for 10 years, and we’re going to continue to be friends…” said Cyrus.
In November of 2019, Miley had surgery on her vocal cords. Following the surgery, the singer was left unable to speak. At the time, she shared that she was steering away from alcohol and drugs, which left her feeling great.
Miley also spoke about how she was seeking information about addiction history in her family and pursuing therapy. She shared that some of the abonnement feelings her mom had as an adopted child reflected her challenges and her dad’s parents getting divorced at an early age.
In March 2020, fans got a chance to relive Hannah Montana when Miley shared that her former co-star, Emily Osment, who played her best friend on the show, will be a guest on her Bright Minded Series.
Miley recalled one of the most exciting guest appearances considering they were best friends and had worked together for 15 years. They reflected on their experience together on the show and how it was strange for them to continue to play the parts as they matured and wanted to move on.
Dolly Parton was named among the 100 most influential people. Miley decided to honor her godmother for receiving the honor. She sees Parton as an “idol” and someone who shows what it means to be a humanitarian.
Miley also highlighted the fact that you would rarely meet someone who does not love her godmother. She sees Dolly as her idol not just because of her impressive career but because of her values and beliefs. Miley also commanded Dolly for her iconic town tramp/saint holy look that communication an interesting contradiction.
Miley Cyrus has become the face of the new perfume: Gucci Flora Gorgeous Gardenia Eau de Parfum. The collaboration between Miley and Gucci focuses on an individual expression that she has always believed in and displayed throughout her career.
She emphasizes “to always wear your heart on your sleeve, and to embrace all the qualities and experiences that must who we are.” Besides her unique personality, the brand seemed to love her hairstyle (currently rocking a mullet) that aligns with the vision.
One of the reasons that Miley connected with the brand was because she felt the perfume had a real sense of authenticity. The smell reminds her of her garden at home, representing a free-spirited vibe of not following any specific rule.
The creative director of Gucci reflected that the fragrance represents a world of unlimited possibilities. There is also a hint to Kawaii (cute Japanese culture) in the campaign. Miley’s outgoing and free-spirited personality fell perfectly in line with the brand’s vision for the floral fragrance.
