Born Into Chaos
As the clock struck midnight on January 1, 2000, Katheryn Hudson and her family gathered in their home, ready for the apocalypse. Her parents were both Pentecostal ministers who stocked the garage with canned food. Therefore, on the eve of Y2K, they turned down the blinds, and their children joined them in prayer. Although Armageddon never arrived, the 15-year-old, now known as Katy Perry, would’ve been ready.

Perry was born into chaos, she likes to say. Growing up in Santa Barbara, California, Perry’s family was conservative, and she wasn’t allowed to listen to rock or pop music. They also couldn’t watch channels like MTV and VH1. She was only allowed to listen to the Sister Act 1 and 2 soundtracks. It was much different than the provocative Perry we know today.
