Like a Dark Horse: Katy Perry’s Fascinating Love Life

Her First Album Was Gospel Music

Around age nine, Perry started taking voice lessons and learned to play the guitar a few years later. During her early teenage years, she rebelled against her strict upbringing and decided to pierce her nose. She also had an interest in pursuing a music career. Although it wasn’t the music she wanted to make, she took trips to Nashville with her mom to record her first gospel album.

Perry’s first album was called Katheryn Hudson, and she said it reached maybe 100 people before the label went bankrupt in 2001. When her friends exposed her to other music, she was inspired by the flamboyant and theatrical work of Freddie Mercury. She wanted to be her own person, so she hung out with everyone in high school.
