First comes love, then comes marriage, then comes a baby in the baby carriage. While this might not be the exact order Katy Perry has followed, wedding bells are definitely in her future as she has been engaged to Orlando Bloom since Valentine’s Day 2019. They welcomed their first daughter a year ago, and that got us thinking about her past loves.
Throughout her career, Perry has been linked to many different men with songs tied to those romances. The “California Girls” singer has dated everyone from Travis McCoy to John Mayer, with a marriage thrown into the mix. Find out who kissed the girl and liked it as we dive into Katy Perry’s life and dating history.
As the clock struck midnight on January 1, 2000, Katheryn Hudson and her family gathered in their home, ready for the apocalypse. Her parents were both Pentecostal ministers who stocked the garage with canned food. Therefore, on the eve of Y2K, they turned down the blinds, and their children joined them in prayer. Although Armageddon never arrived, the 15-year-old, now known as Katy Perry, would’ve been ready.
Perry was born into chaos, she likes to say. Growing up in Santa Barbara, California, Perry’s family was conservative, and she wasn’t allowed to listen to rock or pop music. They also couldn’t watch channels like MTV and VH1. She was only allowed to listen to the Sister Act 1 and 2 soundtracks. It was much different than the provocative Perry we know today.
Around age nine, Perry started taking voice lessons and learned to play the guitar a few years later. During her early teenage years, she rebelled against her strict upbringing and decided to pierce her nose. She also had an interest in pursuing a music career. Although it wasn’t the music she wanted to make, she took trips to Nashville with her mom to record her first gospel album.
Perry’s first album was called Katheryn Hudson, and she said it reached maybe 100 people before the label went bankrupt in 2001. When her friends exposed her to other music, she was inspired by the flamboyant and theatrical work of Freddie Mercury. She wanted to be her own person, so she hung out with everyone in high school.
Perry decided to focus on a music career instead of school, so she got her GED and moved to L.A. to work with producer and songwriter Glen Ballard. She was just 17 at the time and being on her own was more challenging than she expected. It was five years of no money, barely making rent, selling her clothes for money, and writing bad checks.
Perry went through a string of disappointments before getting her big break. Ballard couldn’t find a recording company to take Perry, and her 2004 collaboration with The Matrix was scrapped shortly before release. After three failed record deals, she signed with Capitol Records in 2007. Her first big single was “Ur So Gay,” which caught Madonna’s attention.
In 2005, Perry started dating the troubled actor, Johnny Lewis. It was her first public romance before her big break, but it didn’t last very long. They broke up after just one year of dating, and it was probably for the best. Lewis partially inspired Perry’s songs “Circle the Drain” and “The One That Got Away.”
In 2012, Lewis murdered his landlord and then committed suicide. He had a history of drug addiction and arrests. However, Perry was devastated when she heard the news of his death because she felt terrible that she hadn’t been able help him, but she didn’t want to let herself be influenced by his destructive lifestyle, which is why they broke up.
“I Kissed a Girl” was Perry’s breakout single. It was the song of the summer in 2008 and propelled Perry’s album “One of the Boys” to the Billboard Top 10. Her follow-up single “Hot n Cold” also charted highly. At the 2009 Grammys, she picked up Newcomer of the Year, which propelled her career to new heights.
She was the girl everyone was talking about, and her songs were on every radio station. It was a huge departure from what she had grown up listening to, but Perry was excited for the world to see what else she could do. She started to be known for her theatricality when she performed “I Kissed a Girl” on the Warped Tour with a giant tube of lip balm.
As her career took off, Perry started dating Travis “Travie” McCoy. The pair began dating in 2006 after they met at a recording studio, and she played his love interest in the Gym Class Heroes video for “Cupid’s Chokehold.” McCoy reportedly gave Perry a promise ring just before her debut hit, “I Kissed a Girl.”
Unfortunately, the couple split in 2008 after Perry broke up with McCoy via email. She said his drug use was the reason she ended the relationship. McCoy admitted that he didn’t blame Perry because he chose drugs over the relationship. He started to doubt his role in her life as she became more popular.
After Perry and McCoy split, there were rumors that Perry was spending time with Josh Groban, who was still riding the success of his Noel holiday album. Although tabloids claimed they were a couple, Groban’s representatives said the rumors were false.
Groban admitted that they skated on the line of dating, but it was never anything official. Can you imagine being a woman in the spotlight and having men publicly say they didn’t date you as if it would be embarrassing? That must be hard for female celebrities.
After finishing the Warped Tour and hosting the MTV Europe Music Awards in 2008, she started the following year by hosting the 2009 Brit Awards. Perry then embarked on her first solo tour from January to November for her album “One of the Boys.” She also opened for No Doubt and hosted a few more award shows.
Perry somehow found the time to record a live album titled “MTV Unplugged,” which featured acoustic performances of five tracks from “One of the Boys.” 2009 was also an important year because she met Russell Brand while filming a cameo for his film Get Him to the Greek.
After filming a scene where Brand and Perry kiss for Get Him to the Greek (which didn’t appear in the movie), the two struck up a romance after seeing each other at the 2009 MTV VMAs. Their romance was a whirlwind, and they moved quickly. After just a year of dating, the pair were engaged and headed down the aisle.
We always thought they were married for at least a few years, but they only lasted 14 months. Brand reportedly texted Perry to let her know he was filing for divorce. After that, she never heard from him again, she said in a 2016 interview. Who texts someone they are getting divorced then never speaks to them again?
One of Perry’s biggest hits was “California Gurls,” featuring Snoop Dogg in May 2010. The song was the lead single for her album Teenage Dream. The song shot to the top of the charts and paved the way for the album. It was another song that made people realize she was a force to be reckoned with.
Perry’s follow-up singles − “Teenage Dream,” “Firework,” “E.T,” and “Last Friday Night” − made her the second artist, after Michael Jackson, to have five No. 1 hits from a single album. The album was such a huge success that she released an extended version the following year with three more singles.
Months after Perry split from Russell Brand, she was on the rebound with a few different hookups, including with French model Baptiste Giabiconi. She had been friends with him for years, and pictures of them together were plastered all over tabloid covers. They looked pretty cozy at a basketball game too.
However, Perry nipped those romance rumors in the bud when she tweeted, “Single and satisfied.” No one knows if they were friends with benefits or just enjoying each other’s company during a difficult time, but she denied they were ever a romantic couple. Hey, she could do a lot worse.
After her split from Russell Brand, Perry was linked to quite a few men. However, unlike the Baptiste Giabiconi rumors, there was some truth to the talk that Perry dated Florence + The Machine guitarist Robert Ackroyd. During the first half of 2012, the two were linked to one another.
Although in a USA Today interview in July 2012, Perry said that calling her and Ackroyd a couple was a bit of a reach. She added that she likes to meet people and flirt, but it’s not always as serious as it appears. We guess anyone in the spotlight will spark dating rumors if they are seen alone with the opposite sex.
After her sudden split from Russell Brand, Perry started dating John Mayer in June 2012. Their high-profile romance with on and off right from the start. Rumors circulated that they broke up just a month or two after they started dating, but tabloids reported that Mayer and Perry reconciled that fall.
Everything seemed like it was going in the right direction as they spent the holidays together and attended the Grammys as a couple in 2013. However, by March, they called it quits for a second time. After a third reunion, they recorded “Who Do You Love” for Mayer’s album and broke up for good right before Perry’s Prism world tour.
Perry continued to dominate the charts with her album Prism. The album’s hit single, “Roar,” climbed to the top of the charts, and “Dark Horse,” her collaboration with Juicy J, also spent several weeks in the top spot. Perry pushed past Mariah Carey for the most weeks with a No. 1 hit.
Everything was going well for Perry as she continued to beat records and surpass artists who had been in the industry much longer than her. She was named the best-selling artist in the U.S. with sales of 37.6 million units. She also became the first artist to have four songs sell over five million digital units.
During one of Perry’s breaks from John Mayer, rumors flowed that she was dating Robert Pattinson, although they mostly proved to be false. The pair attended a Bjork concert together (as friends possibly), and Pattinson’s ex, Kristen Stewart, was not too thrilled by the rumors.
After they were spotted at a concert together, Perry cleared the air with Stewart by texting her to say the relationship with Pattinson was purely platonic. We all know how awkward it can be to deal with people’s exes, and it must be even more challenging when all parties are famous.
After the NFL announced that Katy Perry would perform at the 2015 Super Bowl, people looked forward to the show. Lenny Kravitz and Missy Elliott served as special guests for the show. With her massive success from her past few albums, Perry’s performance was set to bring in high viewership.
Perry’s halftime show was critically acclaimed, and the Guinness World Records announced that the show had 118.5 million viewers, which was more than for the game itself. It was also the most viewed halftime show at the time. Her dancing sharks also became a meme and added to the popularity of her performance.
In April 2014, rumors swirled that Perry had moved on from John Mayer with DJ and producer Diplo. They spent time together at Coachella that year and were seen cozying up to each other at the Amazing Spider-Man 2 premiere party that year. Everyone said they were much more than friends.
Perry and Diplo were also seen cuddling at a friend’s birthday party, but the romance didn’t last very long. The rumors about their relationship fizzled out quickly, and she told Jimmy Kimmel they were no longer together a few months after Coachella.
In mid-2014, Perry announced that she had founded her own record label under Capitol Records called Metamorphosis Music. The first artist she signed was Ferras, and Perry served as an executive producer on his self-titled EP. She also recorded a duet with him called “Legends Never Die.”
The label was later renamed Unsub Records. She signed a few other artists, but none of them topped the charts like Perry. She was a rare case who tried for years before getting her big break. An artist rarely achieves success like that. The label is still open, and Perry recently signed a former American Idol contestant.
Perry started writing songs for her new album in 2016 and recorded the anthem for the 2016 Summer Olympics entitled “Rise.” She took her time working on the album and told Ryan Seacrest that she didn’t want to rush her fifth album because she was having fun experimenting with different producers and music styles.
The first single from the album was “Chained to the Rhythm,” featuring Skip Marley. It was followed by “Bon Appetit” and “Swish Swish,” which didn’t do as well as Perry’s other songs from the past. She released the album Witness in 2017, and it was one of her least popular releases.
Despite the announcement of the supporting Witness: The Tour, album sales continued to drop. Perry’s previous three albums racked up 17 million in sales, but Witness only had a modest 840,000 by January 2018. It failed to resonate with her fans, and it was the first album that didn’t have a No. 1 single.
Perry took a hard hit because The New York Times labeled her a “pop star without ideology,” and online trolls overran her social media. Perry later reflected that the universe was serving her a piece of humble pie because her music had always been positively received.
Perry and Orlando Bloom first met in 2013 but didn’t start dating until 2016. At first, their relationship was hot and heavy, with trips to Hawaii and Italy filled with lots of PDA. The pair attended the Met Gala together and dressed in a couple’s costume for Halloween. It seemed like the perfect match.
Perry helped plan Bloom’s 40th birthday party, but the couple announced their split in early 2017 because they needed space to work on themselves as individuals. Although they split, Perry and Bloom still had feelings for each other, and the breakup only added to the tough time Perry was going through.
After the failure of her fifth album, Perry suffered mentally. She said her negative thoughts took over, and she didn’t want to plan for the future. Perry felt like she could control the situation by saying, “I’ll have the last word if I hurt myself or do something stupid, and I’ll show you.”
Perry turned up at Sia’s house because she was having a breakdown, and they had bonded over their mental health struggles in the past. Sia said she never realized how reliant Perry was on validation for her psychological well-being. Therefore, after Witness flopped, it put Perry in a dark place.
Perry’s world seemed to turn upside down. In an interview, she said her career was on an upward trajectory, and the slightest shift felt massive to her. She said she broke in half when her album flopped, and she broke up with Bloom. It seemed like her world was falling apart, but the public didn’t see this.
When Perry reflected on her mental health struggle during 2017, she said, “I lost my smile. I don’t know if my smile was ever fully authentically mine, but I was riding on the high of a smile for a long time. Which was the validation, love, and admiration from the outside world.”
While it might not have felt good at the time, Perry said she needed to be broken so that she could find her wholeness differently instead of just living life like a pop star all the time. Perry said gratitude saved her life because she would have wallowed in her sadness if it weren’t for that.
During this hard time, Perry found transcendental meditation. She said it clears her head entirely and helps her get rid of those negative thoughts. It also helped her reduce her anxiety and depression. This practice helped her come out of that dark place and get back on track with her career.
In 2017, Perry shocked her fans when she debuted a pixie cut that was different from her long dark hair. She explained that she changed her style drastically to connect to her mental health journey. Perry said she is strong as Katy Perry, but not as Katheryn Hudson.
Perry said people talked about her hair; they either liked it or didn’t, and she so badly wanted to be Kathryn Hudson instead of Katy Perry. Cutting her hair felt like more of her authentic self. She helped normalize talking about mental health.
In May 2017, Perry announced that she was the first judge selected for the American Idol reboot. She had previously served as a guest judge on the show in 2009, temporarily replacing Paula Abdul. She was joined by Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie on the judging panel.
Perry made waves for her behavior during the show’s premiere because she fell dancing on stage in high heels and kissed one of the shy contestants. It drew in a lot of social media comments. Despite her strange behavior, she returned to the judging panel for Seasons 17 and 18 too.
In 2014, songwriter Marcus Gray, Emanuel Lambert, and Chike Ojukwu filed a lawsuit against Perry, saying she copied their song “Joyful Noise,” which was released before “Dark Horse.” In 2019, a federal jury in L.A. ruled in favor of the trio, finding Perry and her five co-writers liable for copyright infringement.
However, the verdict was overturned in 2020 because the disputed portion of “Dark Horse,” an eight-note tune that runs through most of the song, was not distinctive enough to be protected by copyright laws. Unfortunately for the trio, they lost their six-year court battle.
Although they broke up in 2017, Perry and Bloom reunited in 2018. The couple made their red-carpet debut at the Global Ocean Gala a few months after they started dating again, and people were delighted to see the couple back and stronger than ever.
After a year of dating again, Bloom popped the question on Valentine’s Day 2019 with a flower-shaped pearl and pink diamond ring. It might not be traditional, but it was so perfect for Perry. Although they got engaged over two years ago, they say they are in no rush to get married.
Perry was the subject of an autobiographical documentary called Katy Perry: Part of Me in 2012. The film featured behind-the-scenes footage and clips of a young Perry as well as live performances. Perry also voiced Smurfette in The Smurfs and The Smurfs 2, and she made a cameo in Zoolander.
Perry enjoyed giving fans an inside look into her life so they could see who she was away from the stage. Sometimes singers have a persona they have to keep up, and fans don’t understand that’s not how they act in real life. She also filmed a behind-the-scenes short film about the making of her iconic halftime show.
Perry was born on October 25, 1984, making her 36 years old. She will be 37 in a few months, and she is a Scorpio. This year, she is celebrating her second birthday with her daughter, who was born last August. After she struggled with her mental health, Perry said that she feels like her mid-30s have been so much better.
Perry is eight years younger than Bloom. Her strict, born-again Christian minister parents probably never imagined their daughter’s life would turn out so differently from how they raised her, and one could only hope that they are proud of the woman and mother she is today.
Perry and Taylor Swift both dated John Mayer, but that wasn’t what caused their feud. Perry allegedly tried to poach some of Swift’s backup dancers. Then she released the song “Swish Swish,” which was apparently about their rivalry. Perry said, “I think it’s a great anthem for people to use when someone’s trying to hold you down.”
In May 2018, Perry ended their feud by extending a literal olive branch. She sent Swift an olive branch with a note that said, “I’ve been doing some reflecting on past miscommunication and hurt feelings between us.” The two have since been pictured laughing together backstage at award shows.
Perry announced her pregnancy with Orlando Bloom in March 2020 with the release of her music video for “Never Worn White.” In the video, she showed off her growing baby bump, and it was a dedication to Bloom as well. She confirmed her pregnancy on Instagram as well.
Perry gave birth to her daughter Daisy Dove Bloom on August 26, 2020. With the announcement of their daughter’s birth, Perry and Bloom set up a page with UNICEF for people to donate to mothers and newborns in need. She felt fortunate to set a standard for her daughter right from the beginning.
A few months after their daughter was born, Bloom appeared on Ellen, where he talked about his daughter and Perry. When Daisy was first born, he said that he thought she was his mini-me, but she actually has Perry’s bright blue eyes. He was so happy to talk about her.
Perry and Bloom quickly adjusted to life as parents and instantly fell in love with their daughter. Bloom also said he was a baby whisperer because he does Buddhist chants in the morning, and it soothes Daisy when she hears his voice.
Although she loves being a mother now, Perry admits there was a time in her life when she would have said of a pregnancy, “Get this thing out of me.” She has two nieces, and she never felt maternal instincts before becoming pregnant with her daughter. It was something she never thought she would want.
However, now that she is a mother, she wouldn’t change it for the world. Perry said her daughter taught her the true meaning of unconditional love. These days it’s all about the small things in their life, like where they can go for a walk or swim. She enjoys just watching her daughter, which is something she never thought about in the past.
Besides giving birth to her daughter, Perry also released her latest album, Smile, last August. It started with the release of the single “Never Worn White,” and “Daisies” became the lead single for her sixth album. It was the first time she released new music since 2017.
The album received mixed reviews and debuted at number four in the United States. Perry further promoted the album with four compilation EPs, and those were followed by the single, “Not the End of the World,” in December 2020. In the music video, Zooey Deschanel impersonated Perry.
Early in her career, Perry realized she looked like Zooey Deschanel, and she would use it to her advantage. When the two got together for an Instagram live, Perry said it was like looking in a mirror. For a long time, they had a funny friendship, where people would confuse them all the time.
Perry also admitted that when she came to L.A., she was a nobody. Deschanel was already a well-known name, so she would pretend to be her to get into clubs. Perry said she had no money and no clout, so she would pose as Deschanel to get the celebrity treatment. Deschanel knew about it because people would tell her they saw her at the club, but she didn’t care.
In December 2018, Perry was performing at a fundraiser for those affected by the Malibu wildfires. She auctioned off a date with Bloom, which included a motorcycle ride and lunch. She said, “You get to hold him in a way that I am not excited about.” The bidding reached $20,000, thanks to one excited fan, but Perry wasn’t having it.
“Laura, I’m sorry. I’m buying it for $50,000,” Perry said before dropping the microphone and walking off stage. Fans were divided over the gesture and couldn’t decide if it was sweet or annoying. But hey, if we were dating Orlando Bloom, we wouldn’t want anyone else to touch him either.
When Perry and Bloom got engaged in 2019, they didn’t start planning a wedding right away. People thought this was strange because they knew they wanted to be together. Fast forward two years later, and they still don’t have a wedding date, but there is a valid reason for that.
Bloom said, “It’s important to me that we are aligned. I’ve been married and divorced before, and I don’t want to do it again.” Perry has also been through a rough marriage in the past, and she wants to make her relationship with Bloom last, so they are doing things on their own time.
On January 20, 2021, Perry performed her classic single “Firework” at the Celebrating America concert. Four months later, she released a new single, “Electric,” and announced that she would have a residency at Resorts World Las Vegas starting December 2021. She is one of many pop stars to earn a residency on the strip.
She has lots of exciting stuff coming up in the future, and people can’t wait to see what she will do next. We are still waiting for her wedding to Bloom, but we have a feeling they are going to make us wait a while. Hopefully, they withstand the test of time and have more adorable babies.
