Moving Forward
As her father’s health declined, so did Aretha’s career. She was also burdened with a huge bill from the IRS. However, in 1980, Franklin had a cameo in the movie “The Blues Brothers” which helped revive her career. She performed “Think” with comedians John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd. The movie gave the singer exposure to a new generation of R&B fans, and she was soon signed by Arista Records.
She released the album “Jump To It” in 1982 by her new record label. The album was successful and earned Franklin another Grammy nomination. Unfortunately, two years later she split up with Turman, and her father passed away. This was obviously a difficult time for the singer, but it didn’t stop her.
