If you’re familiar with Lip Smackers, Spice Girls and Pogo sticks, then you probably had a crush on Nick Carter. Google “Who is the most popular Backstreet Boy?” and you’ll see you aren’t the only one. The youngest of the five-man band that defined the ‘90s danced his way into the hearts of tweens and teens all around the world.
Aaron’s older brother Nick most certainly didn’t go unnoticed. His curtained-hair and boy-next-door looks made him a firm favorite amongst teens, mums, and grandmas alike. But with all that success, why don’t the two brothers speak to each other anymore?
The relationship between the two has become increasingly turbulent, clouded with accusations, court hearings and restraining orders. It’s a messy situation to say the least, so what’s at the root of Nick and Aaron Carter’s estranged relationship?
The most recent turn of events is that Aaron believes his estranged family members are trying to place him under a conservatorship. However, is this the truth? Well, the trouble dates back to the duo’s teens, as revealed in House of Carters, their 2006 E! reality show.
The World is Watching
We can see the cracks beginning to show in one scene where Nick can be heard shouting “You’re going to turn the f***ing music down and respect me!” Aaron responds: “Don’t spit in my face!” They then start throwing punches, until the fight is broken up by family members.
The trouble continued when their sister Leslie died of a drug overdose and Nick didn’t attend her funeral. “I wanted to be at my sister’s funeral, but my family has always had a complicated dynamic,” Nick said. “I love my family. I want to thank everyone for all of their compassion and support that I have received during this most difficult time.”
Dr. Phil Heals All
In 2013, Nick spoke with Dr. Phil about his new book, Facing the Music and Living to Talk About It, about hitting rock bottom with drugs and alcohol. “I started to get blamed by the rest of the family,” he wrote.
“They were blaming me for Leslie’s death,” he said. “I felt it was unfair, especially with all the things I have done and continue to do for them.” Nick said growing up, he took on their father’s role and took Aaron to rehab. “It was heartbreaking but, at the same time, there was more hope,” he said.
Why Didn’t Nick Attend His Sister’s Wedding?
In February 2014, Aaron’s twin, Angel, got married. Aaron walked his sister down the aisle, but Nick was not in attendance. At this point the world was wondering… what’s going on with this family? But they were yet to get answers.
When Nick married Lauren Kitt at the Bacara Resort in Santa Barbara, Aaron didn’t attend. “Aaron signed a contract to appear at the National Cherry Blossom Festival Parade in D.C. before Nick’s wedding date was announced,” his representative told People.
The Cracks Begin to Show
There’s no doubt the two brothers suffer with mental health issues, which only further strained their relationship. In March 2016, while announcing his support of Trump in a chat with GQ, Aaron said:
“When I turned 18, I got $2 million in trust-fund money, and I got $4 million in taxes my parents didn’t pay when I was 11 and 12 years old. I worked really hard for that money… Up until I was 18. Doing thousands and thousands of shows, working and providing for my family.”
It Doesn’t End There
Aaron said when Nick was 18 years old, he was out of the house. “Didn’t take care of the family. I started when I was 7 years old, and I was a provider for my family, too…. I wouldn’t want anyone to feel sorry for me. Like, get your facts straight.”
When Aaron released his single Fool’s Gold in 2016, Nick took it as an opportunity to show some love for his brother and publicly try to mend old wounds. “Just bought my brother @aaroncarter new single #FoolsGold keep up the great work homie!” he tweeted.
Then the Cracks Appear to Heal
Things appeared to be calm between the two for a year. The brothers continued their solo careers, touring the world and spending their spare time residing at home in California. Backstreet Boys fans around the world thought that the feud had finally been put to rest. But alas… that good spirit wasn’t going to last.
In 2017, Aaron was arrested for driving under the influence and for the possession of pot. His girlfriend at the time, Madison Parker, was taken into custody for alleged drug-related offenses. Nick wrote on Twitter: “To my brother: I love u no matter what & if u feel the need to reach for help, I am here and willing to help you get better. Family isn’t always easy, be we’re all here for you.”
Don’t @ Me, Bro
Aaron didn’t like the tone of this tweet, apparently. “If my own blood (Nick) truly cared about my well-being, why wouldn’t he call me directly and have a conversation instead of making this about him through a very public forum? That’s not cool at all to use me for his PR and kick me while I am down.” The tweet has since been deleted.
At the height of the #MeToo movement, Nick’s ex Melissa Schuman wrote a blog post accusing Nick of raping her in 2002. Schuman was a member of a girl band called Dream, and said Nick assaulted her in the bathroom of his Santa Monica apartment when she was 18 and still a virgin. She said he started to kiss her, refused her rejection and she was unable to fight him off.
Schuman decided not to press charges at the time. “I didn’t have the money, the clout or access to an attorney who was powerful enough to stand up against my abuser’s legal counsel,” she said.
Although some people rallied around Melissa, the media was mostly negative. “I think what is unique for me is that my abuser has a slew of fans, people who support him no matter what,” she said.
The Fan’s Life Mission
“They’ve made it their life’s mission to destroy me,” Melissa continued. “Hashtag with Melissa Schuman is a liar, release my personal home and phone number, threaten my family including my eight-year-old son, drive by my house. And the comments made by Brian, and AJ, and Sharna Burgess only emboldens that harassment.”
The charges never made it to court and got dismissed as the court said the statute of limitations had passed. Nick’s lawyer, Michael Holtz, said he is “happy to put the matter behind him.” Nick denied the allegations ever since he first learned of them.
Music is the Answer. Right?
2018 was a great year for Aaron on the music front. He released his album LOVE and Nick tweeted “Congratulations to my brother for coming out with his new album.” Now how’s that for brotherly love and support? Especially through the pair’s favorite 148-character medium of communication.
The following year, Aaron returned the favor by thanking his old bandmates for DNA, their first No. 1 album in 20 years. “I can’t tell you how happy this makes me for my brother and all the guys who were like brothers to me growing up love you guys,” he said. DNA was the ninth studio album and was first released in Japan on January 23, 2019.
Time for a Restraining Order
Unfortunately, in 2019, things turned dark between the two brothers once again. Aaron shared an insulting tweet about his brother, which he’s now deleted. He accused Nick of leaving his family behind and said he’s never even met his brother’s son. That’s when Nick revealed he and his sister Angel are seeking a restraining order against Aaron.
“In light of Aaron’s increasingly alarming behavior and his recent confession that he harbors thoughts and intentions of killing my pregnant wife and unborn child, we were left with no choice but to take every measure possible to protect ourselves and our family,” Nick wrote.
Then Aaron Sides with Melissa
“We love our brother and truly hope he gets the proper treatment he needs before any harm comes to himself or anyone else.” He used the hashtags #mentalhealth, #GunControlNow and #GunControl.
On September 22nd, after a flurry of tweets about the conflict with Nick, Aaron told his followers to read an iPhone note. “I’m well aware many of you have shown concern for me over the past few weeks,” it said.
“Having people who genuinely care for you is something that should never be taken for granted. For as long as I can remember, I’ve chased unconditional love and hoped for true stability in my family. I’ve spent most of my adult life seeking validation from these same people.”
It didn’t end there. “I started to get a chip on my shoulder when I kept coming up short on something that doesn’t cost a thing. LOVE. All I want is Love.” He went on to say that “what transpired does not represent “my true wants or needs.”
It Spirals Out of Control
To address the restraining order, Aaron wrote: “I have never had thoughts of causing anyone pain, let alone taking anyone’s life.” He said it was “hurtful” to read those things “because if these people really knew me, they would have never used that as a tactic to control me.”
“What’s actually more hurtful though, is knowing how effected my innocent nieces and nephews will be by choices the adults around them have made. With that in mind, I ask everyone to please leave me alone and let the legal system do their thing.”
Big on Social Media
Aaron’s social media presence had become erratic to say the least, with the star accusing his brother of raping a 91-year-old woman. TMZ followed that up in a report stating that in Nick’s appeal for a restraining order against his brother, Nick said he believed his brother was in possession of multiple firearms.
Later, in an interview with TMZ, Aaron claimed the police had arrived at his home in accordance with to 5150 – a California law code for the “temporary, involuntary psychiatric commitment of individuals who present a danger to themselves or others due to signs of mental illness.”
The Past Haunts
Aaron started opening up more about his past, saying he suffered abuse at the hands of his brother Nick in the early Noughties, once at the 2001 Nickolodeon Kids Choice Awards when he was 13 and another in 2006 on their reality TV show House of Carters.
The first instance was when Aaron was accepting an award. Nick stands to the side and then aggressively smashes a pie in his face. Aaron claimed that Nick broke his nose with a pie at the kids choice awards during his acceptance speech.
Trouble for the Reality TV Stars
The second instant came from the previously mentioned House of Carters. In the altercation from which the family broke up, Nick pushes Aaron by the throat into another room and shoved him before closing the door behind him.
Afterwards, Aaron screamed “You are not a good person, and everybody sees it, Nick.” Aaron reshared the video on Twitter on September 18th, 2019, and wrote, “LEAVE ME ALONE. FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE. IM BEGGING YOU. PLEASE. “
Back to the Restraining Order
In August 2019, some more texts were revealed that shed light on the restraining order saga. TMZ claimed that they had obtained documents about the filing, which reveal that Aaron had reportedly admitted to his twin sister Angel that he had been “diagnosed with schizophrenia and bipolar 2 years ago.”
Angel then allegedly asked “if he heard voices” and Aaron reportedly told his sister, “I have thoughts of killing babies.” TMZ then reports that Angel asked if Aaron thought of killing anybody else, to which Aaron responded, “I think about killing Lauren Kitt [Nick’s pregnant wife].”
It Gets Darker
Lina Valentina, Aaron’s former girlfriend, was there at the time and actively participating in the conversation. She apparently said, “Angel, how do you think I feel with Aaron sleeping with a sword next to him?” Aaron is said to have responded, “Shut up Lina, you are next on my list.”
Following these reported messages, Angel said she called the authorities to conduct a welfare check on Aaron Carter. TMZ reported Nick explained his rationale behind the restraining order in the filing, claiming that he was worried Aaron would heed the “voices in his head and cause harm to my family.”
So, What About the Guns?
Nick had accused Aaron of having firearms, and prior to the filing, Aaron was seen buying guns in early September and reportedly bought “a handgun and a rifle, plus 300 rounds of hollow tip bullets” according to TMZ.
The outlet said Aaron had inherited additional weapons from his father and obtained his gun license “less than two weeks ago,” after which he bought “a 9mm handgun and 2 assault rifles.” With his history of violent language, him owning firearms doesn’t sound like a good idea either way.
Aaron then told TMZ that he was “gonna bring my 9 millimetre [gun] down” when the cops arrived at his home under 5150. He also said that he told the police officers “Just so you know, I have multiple firearms loaded with one in the chamber around the house. The officers said, “That’s your right.”
When TMZ pressed Aaron about whether or not he had disclosed he was bipolar when buying the guns, Aaron said, “What I’m telling you guys is look at the clip.” No one knows what clip he’s referring to, though.
The Restraining Order Arrives
On September 18th, 2019, Aaron tweeted: “I was just served lol.” In another Tweet, he wrote “Take care. @nickcarter we’re done for life.”
Aaron shared he hadn’t seen his brother in 4 years and didn’t intend to see him again. Aaron refuted Nick’s earlier statement and said, “I am astounded at the accusations being made against me and I do not wish harm to anyone, especially my family.”
More Accusations Fly
TMZ reported the restraining order was temporary and that Aaron has to stay at least 100 feet away from Nick, his wife, their kids and other family members. However, the damage was already done.
That’s when Aaron threw more accusations Nick’s way and brought up Melanie’s previous rape accusations as well as a 2004 report that Paris Hilton had allegedly been hit by her then-boyfriend, Nick. Phew, shots are really being fired here!
The Nick and Paris Fiasco
At the time, Hilton was pictured with a swollen lip and bruises on her arms. The New York Post said a source claimed Hilton had told them Nick had beaten her following a night out. Hilton’s rep declined to comment, but Nick’s lawyer Marty Singer denied the allegations and said, “Even though they broke up, they spent Monday night together, and Paris left Nick’s house Tuesday morning happy.”
Nick tweeted, “Anybody who knows me knows I wouldn’t hurt a fly I’ve never been accused of rape I’ve never been accused of beating @ParisHilton how am I the violent one.” He then said there had been a cover up.
He Accused His Late Sister of What?
If these accusations aren’t enough to make your head spin, listen to this: Aaron claimed his late sister, Leslie, had sexually abused him between the ages of 10 and 13 years old when she wasn’t on her medications for her bipolar disorder. He also claimed he had been sexually abused by two unnamed back up dancers and physically abused by Nick his whole life.
“My sister Leslie suffered from bipolar and took lithium to treat it. She never liked the way it made her feel and when she was off of it she did things that she never meant to do I truly believe that. I was 10 years old…” his Tweet read.
The Tweet Continues:
“My sister raped me from the age of 10 to 13 years old when she wasn’t on her medications and I was absused [sic] not only sexually by her but by my first two back up dancers when I was 8 years old. And my brother abused me my whole life.”
Angel was granted her restraining order against Aaron in September 2019. TMZ reported it required Aaron to stay 100 yards away from Angel and her family. The order banned Aaron from making “any social media posts regarding them that include threats or brandishing of weapons.”
The Documents Reveal All
The documents said that Angel claimed that Aaron had threatened to send people to attack her. He allegedly said, “I have people that would come and harm you.” In the same FaceTime conversation in which Aaron said that thing about killing babies’ comment, she said he also “admitted to torturing a turtle by lighting it on fire when he was a child” and that he felt “no emotion.”
Luckily for those close to Aaron, on September 22nd, 2019, Aaron said his guns had been taken from him. “My twin sister and my brother teamed up and got my guns taken away from me,” he Tweeted. “Until the EPO AND TRO are dismissed. Then I get my guns back.”
Aaron Claims Nick Attacked Him
Aaron claimed that Nick once attacked him, and Paris Hilton came to his aid. He tweeted Paris asking her to reinforce his statement, saying “@ParisHilton speak up please you were there and pulled him off of me when he attacked me that morning!!! And tried to kill me. Help me.”
He sent another tweet that day, saying, “I’m so scared that something is going to happen to me. I endured so much abuse from Nick that I don’t know what he’s capable of. If something happens. I let God lead the way and he is with me.”
Aaron Releases Statement About His Welfare
On September 23, 2019, Aaron shared, “Please READ” alongside an image of a note in which he thanked those who had expressed concern for his well-being, and he also addressed his turbulent relationship with his family.
“For as long as I can remember, I’ve chased unconditional love and hoped for true stability in my family. I’ve spent most of my adult life seeking validation from these same people. I started to get a chip on my shoulder when I kept coming up short on something that doesn’t cost a thing.”
Fighting Fire with Fire
He said I’ve been fighting fire with fire… “I have never had any thoughts of causing anyone pain, let alone taking anyone’s life. It was hurtful for me to read those things because if these people really knew me, they would never have used that as a tactic to control me.”
What’s actually more hurtful though, is knowing how [affected] my innocent nieces and nephews will be by choices the adults around them have made.” He asked that everyone leave him alone and let the legal system “do their thing.”
Aaron Reveals He’s Seeking Help
In California, Aaron was interviewed by TMZ about his siblings’ restraining orders and concerns about his gun ownership. On video, Aaron explained that he didn’t want to speak about his family anymore and followed up with: “At this point, I’ve done all I can do.”
He questioned why his brother got restraining orders against him a month and a half after he found out that he supposedly wanted to kill his child and wife. “Why would you wait that long though, if that’s how you truly felt? You waited a month and a half to do that.”
“I Don’t Even Speak to Nick”
In the interview, Aaron once again said his brother abused him. “I don’t even speak to Nick, and everybody knows that.” He then said he’s working with a “legitimate psychiatrist” and to improve his mental health.
Aaron confirmed he’d been talking to media outlets like MTV and WE TV about his story, and said he’d “already tapered off Xanax for five days.” He then presented deeds to his guns, saying he had sold all his guns yesterday.
A Calmer 2020
At the end of 2019, Aaron said, “I will abide by the judge’s order, but I will not stop speaking on behalf of victims such as Melissa Schuman. I am saddened by my family and what they have done to me. Your lies have broken my heart.”
Things seemed to calm down in 2020, with the brothers no longer speaking and Aaron legally required to stay away from Angel, Nick, and any of their children. But how long can this family stay quiet for?
Aaron Deals with Family Drama
Aside from his issues with Nick, the last two years has seen Aaron go through a lot of personal drama. Just one week after his 33-year-old fiancée, Melanie Martin, gave birth to their child, Prince, the couple broke up.
On November 30th, 2021, Aaron shared the news on social media, and accused his ex of betraying him by communicating with his estranged family members, including his twin sister Angel Conrad, but no mention of Nick. However, he did reference their tumultuous relationship in several tweets.
A Tweetful 2021
Aaron tweeted. “I can’t believe she betrayed me this way. I gave her the world. I have the most conniving deceiving family and Melanie has been lying to me the whole time communicating with my twin sister and the family members who tried to put me in prison and who tried to get a conservatorship on me in court.”
A source close to Nick told E! News that he and his wife, Lauren Kitt, haven’t spoken to Aaron or Melanie in a long time. “They do not speak and there is no conservatorship attempt happening,” an insider revealed.
The Conservatorship Looms
Aaron claimed he believes that his estranged family is trying to gain an ally through Melanie. Why? As a part of a plan to place him under a conservatorship. He said they are using Melanie to gather information for the case.
Melanie denied this and told TMZ that she never was given the impression his family was trying to place him under a conservatorship. She also denied that his family “grilled her on info.” Melanie didn’t specify which family members she’d been in contact with.
Could There Be an Element of Jealousy?
Aaron’s love life has been turbulent at best, while Nick’s marriage has been pretty smooth sailing. Nick said he’d never get married, until he went on a blind date in 2008 and met fitness expert Lauren Kitt.
“At the time — and they say this happens all the time — I didn’t want a relationship,” Nick told Rolling Stone in 2014. “I didn’t want to be in a relationship at all, and then all of a sudden . . . smack, right in my face.”
True Love Came Easy
It seems like it was just meant to be. After dating for four years, Nick proposed to Lauren and they tied the knot in 2014 in Santa Barbara. They their first child in 2016, a boy called Odin.
Could Aaron be jealous of Nick’s smooth sailing love life? His first public relationship goes all the way back to Hilary Duff back in the The Lizzie McGuire days. And his love life has been very messy since then.
Aaron Also Dated Lindsay Lohan
It was short-lived, and it happened while Aaron was dating Hilary Duff. In 2005, he said he was dating Hilary for like a year-and-a-half, “and then I just got a little bored so I went and I started getting to know Lindsay.” Harsh!
It’s a good thing it didn’t work out though, because a few years later he said if he had a chance to talk to her, “she would probably end up trying to attack me or something because the things that I would have to say would be very blunt and not what everybody else has told her.”
He Once Proposed to a Playboy Model
18-year-old Aaron popped the question in 2006 to Kari Anne Peniche when he was 18 and she was 22. She also had allegedly dated his brother Nick which probably didn’t help their future relations. She said yes to the proposal, which was at a Playboy Comedy Tour at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas.
Sadly though, the pair called off the engagement just 6 days later. “He decided he had made a mistake. He’s young and got caught up in the moment. He hopes they can be friends,” a representative told People.
Next Up: Madison Parker
Madison Parker wasn’t famous, and the pair seemed to be into each other – so much so they even lived together for a year. But Aaron broke it off when he realized he wanted to explore his bisexuality.
In a tweet which has now been deleted, he said: “There were years that went by that I thought about, but it wasn’t until I was 17 years old, after a few relationships with girls, I had an experience with a male that I had an attraction to who I also worked with and grew up with.”
And Then Lina Valentina Came Along
In 2018, Aaron fell in love with Russian-born and Los Angeles-based artist Lina Valentina. He said she was “the one” and it certainly seemed that amongst all the chaos with Nick, Aaron had finally found some stability.
“You have my heart for the rest of my life our relationship is new but we WILL grown [sic] old together and have our family and I will cherish honor respect and be the man I’ve always wanted to be because you’ve shown me you’re the woman I’ve always dreamed of.” They broke up 1 year later.
Let’s Hope the Family Finds Some Peace
Feuds, fights, abuse, rape, restraining orders, accusations, court dates, heartbreak. Is there anything this family hasn’t gone through? One thing is for sure though, the world can’t get enough of the Carter brother drama.
Regardless of how it ends, let’s hope that this family and the young children born into it are able to find stability, strength, and inner peace amongst a tumultuous and crazy backdrop. Cos we want it that way!
