He’s Been Reading Lips for 20 Years
Yeah, so apparently, he’s deaf. Only recently (February 2022) has Dave announced his deteriorating hearing loss. He said he’s been reading lips for 20 years, chalking it up to the typical rock musician syndrome of hearing loss. “I’m a rock musician. I’m f***ing deaf,” he said. The pandemic hasn’t helped, he explained, as mask-wearing has naturally made it harder.

He told Howard Stern on his radio show, “If you were sitting next to me right here at dinner, I wouldn’t understand a f***ing word you were saying to me the whole f**king time.” The good news: he can still finely pinpoint sounds in the studio, thanks to decades of experience in the music industry.
