Best-selling artists come from all over the world, and a lot of them come right from the US. We’ve gone into the different best-selling singers, musical artists, or bands that are born or formed in each state. Of course, millennials know where Taylor Swift comes from, but what about everyone else? Did you know that Kanye West is from Georgia? (If you are a Kardashian fan, then you probably knew that already.)
There are artists on this list like Madonna, Elvis, Hootie & The Blowfish, and even Eminem. We’ve put this list together to show everyone where some of our favorite artists are today and where they came from. We’ve also added the awards won by the artists and if anything interesting happened during their career. See who is from your state!
Alabama was formed in Fort Payne, Alabama, in 1969, and was founded by Randy Owen and his cousin Teddy Gentry. They were soon joined by another cousin, Jeff Cook. The band has a blend of traditional country music and Southern rock with elements of bluegrass, folk, gospel, and pop music.
Alabama has more than 41 number one country records on the Billboard charts and sold over 75 million records, which makes them the most successful band in country music history. In 2019, Alabama was inducted into the Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum. They were also awarded the first-ever Life Time Achievement Award.
‘Portugal. The Man’ came together back in 2001 at the Wasilla High School in Wasilla, Alaska. The lead singer is John Baldwin Gourley, and his backup consists of Zach Carothers, Kyle O’Quin, Jason Sechrist, Eric Howk, and Zoe Manville. They are known for their alternative/Indie/Psychedelic Rock/Pop music.
‘Portugal. The Man’ has received 21 award nominations throughout their career and won eight of them, including a Grammy for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance in 2018. Throughout their career, they have given back to the community in many different ways. They raised $1 million to help put musical instruments into schools throughout America, raised money for mental health awareness, and after one concert, raised money for endangered Sumatran tigers.
Linda Ronstadt was born and raised in Tucson, Arizona. She started her career in the mid-‘60s after joining forces with Bobby Kimmel and Kenny Edwards. She then ventured out into a solo career path and started touring with The Doors, Neil Young, Jackson Browne, and others.
Ronstadt is considered the most successful female singer in the ‘70s, and she appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone, Newsweek, and Time six times. Throughout her career, she has won ten Grammy Awards, two American Music Awards, an Emmy Award, the Latin Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, and many more. In April 2014, she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Johnny Cash was born in Kingsland, Arkansas, and raised in Dyess, Arkansas. His family named him J.R. Cash, but he wasn’t able to go by the initials when he enlisted in the US Air Force, and that’s where he switched his name to John R. Cash. Once he was signed with Sun Records, he started going by Johnny Cash.
While he started his career as a more ‘innocent’ person, he started to drink in the late ‘50s and became addicted to barbiturates and amphetamines. He would use drugs to stay awake during tours. He went through rehab at one point and stayed sober for seven years. While it wasn’t the drugs that killed him, he passed away due to complications from diabetes in 2003.
The Eagles band formed in Los Angeles, California, in 1971 after Glenn Frey and Don Henley decided to form a group while they were working as backup bands. They got together with Randy Meisner and Bernie Leadon and formed a Grammy Award-winning group, Eagles. Frey and Henley were playing with Linda Ronstadt, and she was behind the suggestion of bringing Bernie Leadon in.
Of course, most of us are familiar with their album Hotel California, which ended up being among the best-selling albums in the US. They sold more than 200 million records, which brings them pretty high up on the list. They even passed Lionel Richie out in most albums sold. The band received six Grammy Awards and five American Music Awards.
The Fray was put together in Denver, Colorado. The members were then attending a Christian school. After mixing it up with different family members, the band consisted of Ben Wysocki, Isaac Slade, Dave Walsh, and Joe King. Isaac Slade’s younger brother, Caleb, was the inspiration behind their song “Over My Head (Cable Car),” which ended up reaching the top 100 and then top 40 charts.
It is about how Caleb left the band and the brothers’ strained relationship. Their song “How to Save a Life” was popular as well after it was featured in two different Grey’s Anatomy episodes. This made The Fray release the song as a single, even though it wasn’t meant to be one.
Michael Bolton was born in New Haven, Connecticut. He started his career in 1975 and just took off from there. Throughout his career, he won six American Music Awards, two Grammy Awards, and took home the Lewis Hine Award for Foreign Entertainer of the Year.
There was a copyright infringement scandal in 1992 where the Isley Brothers filed a lawsuit against him, claiming that “Love Is a Wonderful Thing” was plagiarized. The court actually ruled in favor of the Isley Brothers, and they received $4.2 million. Michael Bolton’s music is still popular and being listened to all over the world, and he has a few cameo’s in TV shows as himself, like in Two and a Half Men.
George Thorogood was born in Wilmington, Delaware in 1950, and he is now known for his boogie blues-rock music. You might recognize some of his songs like “Bad to the Bone” and “I Drink Alone.” George and his band, the Destroyers, have released over 20 albums together.
The first real mainstream exposure Thorogood got was when he was a supporting act for the Rolling Stones during their tour in 1981. In 1982, he was the featured musical guest on an episode of Saturday Night Live. He only released his first actual solo album in 2017, so he’s still going strong today.
The Backstreet Boys formed in Florida, where two of the band members were born. The band considers their anniversary date to be April 20th, as that’s the day that the final group member flew over from Kentucky to join them.
Howie Dorough, AJ McLean, Nick Carter, Kevin Richardson, and Brian Littrell made up the ‘The Backstreet Boys.’ Richardson left the band back in 2006 after their reunion, and they went on to release more music without him before he rejoined in 2011. While we all refer to them as a boy band, they pride themselves as being a vocal harmony group – not a boy band.
Kanye West was born in Atlanta, Georgia, and is now a huge star who is married to Kim Kardashian West. On top of his musical career, a lot of us know him as the guy who interrupted Taylor Swift on stage when she was accepting an award, and the one with the line of Yeezy clothing and shoes. He collaborated with Adidas and has some really nice shoe designs. West also tried to open a fast-food chain, but the two locations he opened up shut down pretty quickly.
West is a co-owner of a music streaming service with some other popular artists like Jay-Z, Rihanna, Beyoncé, Madonna, Chris Martin, and Nicki Minaj. It seems like West enjoys random business ventures, and he more recently spoke about how he wants to open an automobile factory in Chicago that will focus on developing a flying car with some Tesla alums. We’ll see what step this artist takes next.
Bruno Mars was born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii, and moved to LA in 2003 to pursue a career in music. Not only does he sing, but he is also a songwriter, dancer, and can play multiple instruments. Over his short but still active career, he has won eleven Grammy Awards, three Brit Awards, four Guinness World Records, nine AMA’s, and ten Soul Train Music Awards. His real name is actually Peter Gene Hernandez, but I think he made the right choice to go with Bruno Mars as he has sold over 130 million records worldwide.
Mars took after his Uncle when he was younger and would perform with his family’s band, The Love Notes, impersonating Elvis. When he was five years old, he peed his pants during a performance, and his mother thought it might have been a mistake bringing him into the music industry. But a new name and twenty years later, he is an award-winning artist.
The Raiders began as a rock band in Boise, Idaho, which was founded by Paul Revere Dick. They were most famous in the late ‘60s, early ‘70s. The band was aiming to have the sound of British Invasion bands (like the Beatles and the Rolling Stones), but with an American, R&B feel to it. Revere was a restaurant owner who first met one of his bandmates at a bakery where he was picking up hamburger buns.
While they have changed band members throughout the years, their main members are Dough Heath, Ron Foos, Danny Krause, Jamie Revere, Darren Dowler, and Tommy Scheckel. Their first major hit was called “Just Like Me,” and it was one of the first rock records, which included a double-tracked guitar solo.
The band Chicago started out in Chicago, Illinois, as ‘the Big Thing.’ After being signed to Columbia Records in 1968, they moved to LA and changed their name to Chicago Transit Authority. They were a lucky band who would perform at the ‘Whisky a Go Go’ nightclub getting them real exposure to famous artists. They even got to open for Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix.
Chicago is now one of the longest-running (and successful) rock groups, and another one of the world’s best-selling groups of all time. There were a lot of firsts for this group, but one of the cooler ones is they were the first rock act to completely sell out Carnegie Hall for a full week in 1971.
Michael Jackson was born and raised in Gary, Indiana, and was the eighth child out of ten. His debut into the musical world was as part of the Jackson 5 in 1964. He was part of the group with four of his older brothers, Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, and Marlon. He became a huge star known for the song “Thriller” and had a lot of controversial accusations thrown around.
Before his death, Jackson got himself into some serious debt. But he has become the artist to make the most money after his death. He went from having a net worth of negative $285 million to a positive $2.4 billion in 2019. This is when Forbes stepped in and recognized him as the highest-earning deceased celebrity every year since he died, except for 2012.
Andy Williams was born in Wall Lake, Iowa, and ended up being part of the music industry for 74 years. He is known for his traditional pop music and the host of The Andy Williams Show. The show won three Emmy Awards, and he sold more than 100 million records worldwide.
Before hosting the show, he performed to a sold-out crowd at Caesars Palace casino and nightclub in 1966 and ended up headlining for them for the next twenty years. On top of his three Emmy Awards, he was nominated six other times throughout the years. Williams also received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Kansas got together in Topeka, Kansas back in 1970. They changed members and their band name a few times and ended up going with the name Kansas. This band has also been through a few lineup changes throughout the years. It began with Kevin Livgren, Don Montre, Lynn Meredith, and Dan Wright.
The band members are now Phil Ehart, Rich Williams, Billy Greer, David Ragsdale, Ronnie Platt, Zak Rizvi, and Tom Brislin. The band was very popular in the ‘70s and ‘80s, and they played sold-out stadiums throughout North America, Europe, and Japan. You might recognize some of their music like “Carry On Wayward Son” or “Dust in the Wind.”
Dwight Yoakam was born in Pikeville, Kentucky (1956), and went on to become a singer-songwriter, musician, and actor with a country style. He started becoming popular in the mid-‘80s and is now the most frequent musician on ‘The Tonight Show.’ Yoakam was nominated for 41 Awards and won eight of them.
He has an award for Top New Male Vocalist, Artist of the Year Award, a Grammy for Best Country Vocal Performance (male), a Grammy for Best Country Collaboration with Vocals, and more. He was also inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2019. Annually, they choose three people to add to the list.
Lil Wayne was born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana. He has been nominated for over two hundred awards throughout his career and won 74 of them, including five Grammy Awards and two American Music Awards. He is well known for his unique rapping voice and has been through a lot to get where he is today. When Lil Wayne was 12 years old, he shot himself in the chest with his mother’s gun.
A nearby policeman brought him to the hospital. All of these years, he has been telling everyone it was an accident. But after the suicides of Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain, he wanted to talk about it, knowing that he might be able to help someone going through the same thing. He told Billboard magazine that he did it after his mother told him he couldn’t perform anymore.
Howie Day was born in Bangor, Maine, and raised in Brewer. His love for music started when his mother bought him a piano when he was five years old. Day started his music career in the late ‘90s and ended up becoming famous for his songs “Collide” and “She Says.” Things started to go downhill for him with some negative attention after he was arrested twice.
In 2004, he was charged after being accused of locking a fan in the bathroom on his tour bus and destroying another fan’s cell phone. Then, he was arrested again in Boston in 2005 after he was reportedly verbally abusing the flight crew after taking sleeping pills and drinking. Day had his chance to defend himself in 2013, saying that stardom like that can be overwhelming, and while its no excuse, he drank a bit too much.
One of the highest-selling female R&B artists ever, Toni Braxton, was born in Severn, Maryland. Braxton was going to college to get her teaching degree and decided to pursue a music career. She was discovered while singing to herself pumping gas. She has won seven Grammy Awards, nine Billboard Music Awards, seven American Music Awards, and many more throughout her career.
You probably recognize some of her songs, like “Another Sad Love Song” or “He Wasn’t Man Enough.” More recently, she has competed in the seventh season of Dancing with the Stars. He built a career for himself and came out with songs you might recognize, like “You’ve Got a Friend” and “Don’t Let Me Be Lonely Tonight.” He has six Grammy Awards, one of them recognizing him as Person of the Year in 2006. At the Grammy Awards that year, artists from different eras performed his songs as a tribute towards him.
Among the speeches, some famous artists attributed their decisions to become musicians to him, like Carole King, Sting, Bruce Springsteen, Taj Mahal, Jackson Brown, David Crosby, the Dixie Chicks, Alison Krauss, and Keith Urban. Taylor was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2000.
I don’t think there is a soul in this world who doesn’t know our next Queen of Pop. Madonna was born in Bay City, Michigan, and moved to New York in 1978 to pursue her career. She started out in pop groups before releasing her album called ‘Madonna’ in 1983.
Her list of awards and nominations is way too long to go through here, but she won seven Grammy Awards and three American Music Awards. Altogether, she was nominated for 658 awards. Madonna is just as famous today and is still the highest-grossing solo touring artist of all time. She has used her career to empower women and created a breakthrough for female artists who came after her.
Prince was born and raised in Minneapolis, Minnesota. As the son of a Jazz singer, pianist, and songwriter, the apple didn’t fall far from the tree. He wrote his first song when he was only seven years old, called “Funk Machine,” and signed on with Warner Bros. Records when he was only 19.
He used his unique funk, dance, and rock music mixed with explicit lyrics to gain success and it worked. Before his unfortunate death in 2016, he worked hard to become one of the best-selling music artists. Prince won seven Grammy Awards, seven Brit Awards, six American Music Awards, an Academy Award, a Golden Globe, and more.
Elvis Presley was born in Tupelo, Mississippi, and grew up in Memphis, Tennessee. He was recording for a while, but his first single, “Heartbreak Hotel,” was released in 1956. This song became a number one hit in the US and his popularity just went up from there. He starred in the movie Love Me Tender which got him into the film industry as well.
After this, he was drafted into the US army and he kept on recording throughout his served time. He went on to marry Priscilla Beaulieu, who he met when she was only 14 years old and he was… over 18. After courting her for seven years, they tied the knot.
The real Slim Shady, Marshall Mathers III, was born in St. Joseph, Missouri, but grew up in Detroit. Eminem climbed his way up, starting with the hip hop group D12 and then took his solo career to the next level. Throughout his career, he was nominated for 44 Grammy Awards and won 15 of them. Overall, he’s been nominated for over 350 awards.
Throughout Eminem’s career, he went through a lot of legal issues and controversy. The craziest legal issue happened in 1999 when Eminem’s mother sued him for $10 million. She was claiming that he was slandering her in his album. She was rewarded $1600 in 2001. I guess he is worth a lot more than this, so what’s almost two thousand dollars to him?
Nicolette Larson was born in Helena, Montana. She would perform with artists in the mid-’70s and released her first album in 1978 called ‘Nicolette.’ Neil Young wrote and recorded the song ‘Lotta Love,’ and Larson covered it in her album. Larson’s version went on to reach number one in the charts.
This started a career for her, and she released 13 more albums. Larson ended up marrying Russ Kunkel, who was a drummer that worked with different popular artists, and they have a daughter named Elsie. Fun fact: Larson briefly dated Weird Al Yankovic in the late ‘80s before meeting her husband.
Mannheim Steamroller started out in Omaha, Nebraska. They are most known for their ‘Fresh Aire’ albums and the multiple Christmas albums that they put out. Chip Davis is a record producer and composer who used Mannheim Steamroller as an alias. They weren’t able to find anyone to distribute their music, so Davis ended up founding his own music label called American Gramaphone.
The first holiday album they put out was in 1997 near Christmas, and they have released more since then. Mannheim Steamroller even has Christmas songs featuring vocals from Johnny Mathis and Olivia Newton-John. This band must really love the holidays as they performed in two Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parades, and they have a 12-hour Christmas radio special with music and stories that play all across the US.
Brandon Flowers and Dave Keuning formed The Killers in Las Vegas back in 2001. In 2002, Mark Stoermer and Ronnie Vannucci Jr joined the band. Out of the rock bands of the 21st century, The Killers are known as one of the biggest. They have a few bigger hits, but two that you might recognize are Mr. Brightside and When You Were Young.
While they didn’t win any Grammy Awards throughout the span of their career, they have been nominated seven times. There were a few years in a row that Brandon Flowers was nominated for Best Dressed Man at the NME Awards, and one year they even nominated him for both best dressed and worst dressed at the same time.

In 2004, he was discovered after putting out his album called ‘Trouble.’
So far in his career, he has won three Boston Music Awards, one Esky Award, and a Grammy. Now, he isn’t exactly the best-selling musician out there, but not a lot of people come from New Hampshire. Mandy Moore was born in Nashua, NH, but she moved over to the film industry.
Whitney Houston was born in Newark, New Jersey. Houston was a first cousin of Dionne Warwick and Dee Dee Warwick, and her “honorary aunt” was Aretha Franklin. She met her at a recording studio when she was only around nine years old. From singing at the Church to having the best-selling single by a woman in music history, she has really made a career for herself.
Whitney Houston is the most awarded female artist of all time. She won two Emmy Awards, six Grammy Awards, 30 Billboard Music Awards, 22 American Music Awards, and more. She has six Guinness World Records mostly for best-selling album of all time and the most awarded/popular female artist of all time.

Throughout his career, Denver released about 300 songs; 200 of them he composed himself.
Denver has sold over 33 million records worldwide, and he has earned 12 gold and four platinum albums. You probably recognize some of his music like “Take Me Home, Country Roads,” “Sunshine on My Shoulders,” and “Rocky Mountain High.” In 1997, Denver purchased a new light plane and took it out for a ride. Unfortunately, the plane crashed, and he died on the spot.
Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel grew up in Kew Garden Hills, which is in Queens, NY. They only lived three blocks away from each other and went to the same schools. As avid music listeners, they fell in love with rock and roll when it was just starting. They went from performing in talent shows to becoming a popular folk-rock duo.
Of course, their relationship consisted of fighting, which obviously leads to reunion tours. Since they broke up in the ‘70s, there have been multiple reunions. It ended up hitting number one for 12 weeks. The song was a tribute to Paul Walker who passed while they were filming the movie. The album did reach double-platinum status, but it never reached higher than 33 on the Billboard album chart.

He is mostly a solo artist but has been in multiple bands like Funston Brothers, the Eagle-Ridin’ Papa, Butterfat, Rufus Krisp, the Earthtones, and Gone Johnson.
He had other opportunities to collaborate with people like Bill Kirchen, Dr. John, and The Tremors. He lived with his wife in New Orleans and wasn’t really a noticed performer. However, the Times-Picayune of New Orleans named his CD Carry the Word the “Best CD of the Year 2000 by a Louisiana Artist,” and he won the New Orleans “Big Easy Award for Best Folk Artist” of Gambit Weekly multiple times.
