Rap’s Doggfather: Snoop Dogg Over the Years

When Snoop Dogg broke into the scene, everyone was busy spitting aggressive lines and using a tough and rough tone of voice to get the memo through. But Snoop arrived, with a soft-spoken form of rapping, a suave and chill whisper. He didn’t need to push hard to make an impact.

Born as Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr., Snoop went on to become a rap icon who has cemented his status as a bonafide legend in the world of hip-hop. Today, he’s a proud father, an even prouder grandfather, and best friends with Martha Stewart. Let’s see how it all went down.

Where Did His Name Come From?

When Snoop Dogg was just a young boy, his parents gave him the nickname Snoopy, because they thought he looked like the character Snoopy, the infamous and endearing Beagle from the classic comic strip Peanuts.

The name stuck to him all throughout his childhood, and eventually evolved into Snoop Dogg, the name we all grew to know and love, the name that turned into his global identity as an absolute rap god.

He Plays the Piano

Even though he’s mostly famous for spitting lines, one of the most fascinating facts about Snoop Dogg is his love of the piano. According to the rapper, his passion for the instrument began at a very young age. It started as a hobby and progressed into live performances.

When he was a little kid, Snoop sang and played the piano at his local church – the Golgotha Trinity Baptist Church. He then developed his passion for writing and rapping while studying at Long Beach’s Polytechnic High School.

He Has an Extremely High IQ

Snoop Dogg is considered to be one of the sharpest, most intelligent rappers in the industry. He reportedly has an IQ of a whopping 147. To put things into perspective, the average IQ level for most humans is anywhere between 85 and 115.

Only a really small fraction of society has an IQ above 130. This places people like Snoop Dogg in an elite category. Frankly, if his professional success in creating music is anything to go by, it’s safe to say that he really is a genius.

He Was Once Banned From Australia

If you’re a diehard fan who thought they knew everything about Snoop Dogg, you’ve likely never heard of this weird predicament he found himself in. The Drop It Like It’s Hot rapper was once banned from flying to Australia.

Following some sketchy convictions in 2007 (for firearms and drug offenses), the country banned his entrance. At the time, he was supposed to participate in MTV’s Australian Video Music Award ceremony in Sydney. But that never ended up happening. The ban was then canceled in 2008.

He Tried to Quit Smoking

In the early ’00s, Snoop Dogg was challenged to quit smoking marijuana for six full months by a youth football league player. “I went to practice high one day and one of the kids said, ‘Coach, you smell like my mama’s boyfriend,’ and I had to check myself. I stopped smoking from that day for 180 days straight,” he revealed.

According to Snoop, it made him a better coach and a better person. “Every year when I coach football around the kids,” Snoop revealed, “I don’t smoke, so that’s three months out of the year that I do that.” Good for him.

He Married His High School Sweetheart

It would be truly impossible to list facts about this award-winning rapper without bringing up his love life. Snoop Dogg and his high school sweetheart, Shante Taylor, tied the knot in the summer of 1997. But a few years later, in 2004, things got a bit rickety.

Allegations that Snoop Dogg had cheated on her with a woman named Celina Powell surfaced all over the news. They ended up divorcing later that year but renewed their vows several years later.

“I Fell Back in Love with My Wife”

“I was trying to get a divorce, but I went back home, and I fell back in love with my wife and kids. A lot of times you get cloudy. This music industry is a mother, man, and it’ll take your vision and blur it. But God is good, so I understand that I need my wife and my kids in my life,” Snoop told the press.

So, what did he do? He threw the divorce papers away. “I don’t want to get a divorce,” he stated, “So if you hear about a divorce, it’ll be my wife divorcing me. It won’t be me divorcing her… And I made a mistake, so I’m trying to get back right.”

A Life of Crime

This is likely one of the least startling facts about the rapper. Rumor has it, that when Snoop Dogg was a teenager, he was part of a group called the Rollin’ 20 Crips, one of the most infamous gangs in Long Beach at the time.

Despite his denials of ever being part of the gang, Snoop wasn’t a stranger to authorities of law enforcement. Between 1989 and 1993, he found himself in and out of jail, serving time for multiple offenses, many concerning drug-related charges.

He Converted to Rastafarianism

In 2012, Snoop Dogg flew to Jamaica, and not long after, he announced that he was converting to Rastafarianism. Snoop also confirmed that he was officially changing his name to Snoop Lion. Following his decision, the now Snoop Lion released a reggae album entitled Reincarnated.

This album, which is Snoop’s twelfth studio album, talked about his journey into the reggae world and discussed his new identity as Snoop Lion. It was received quite well. It was even nominated for Best Reggae Album in 2014.

The Infamous Murder Charges

In 1993, Snoop Dogg and his bodyguard, McKinley Lee, were put on the spot after being charged with conspiracy to commit an assault that led to the death of Philip Woldermariam. However, after several hours of questioning, both were acquitted of the murder charges for the shooting incident that took place at Palms Park.

After the jury spoke, the rapper told reporters:

“They made the right decision; you know what I’m saying? This has been an ordeal that has affected our lives for the past 2 1/2 years. I was just trying to figure out if I was going to be here to raise my son.”

His Soft Voice Was Revolutionary

In a field dominated by hardcore rapping done by usually tough and rough voices like Ja Rule and DMX, Snoop Dogg’s gentle style stood out. His soft-spoken method of rapping wasn’t just unique, but it also formed a new image of a calmer type of “gangster.”

According to Rolling Stone magazine, his distinctive form of rapping is what helped him rise in an already crowded industry. “Snoop’s vocal style is part of what distinguishes him: where many rappers scream, figuratively and literally, he speaks softly,” they wrote.

His Famous Cousins

Not many people know this about Snoop Dogg, but this rapper has a long list of A-listers he proudly calls his cousins, including Brandy, the R&B singer known for hit songs like Afrodisiac, Long Distance, Right Here, and Missing You.

Another cousin is Mercedes Justine Kaestner-Varnado, an American WWE wrestler who goes by the stage name Sasha Banks. Lastly, another one on the list is Delmar Drew Arnaud, also known as Daz Dillinger, one of the pioneers of rap at Death Row Records.

He Fought With A LOT of People

Ever since he broke into the rapping industry, Snoop Dogg has always been a controversial figure, having involved himself in numerous exhausting feuds with fellow celebs. This notorious rapper has crossed paths with politicians and musicians.

Snoop Dogg has fought with Kanye West, Eminem, Dr. Dre, Iggy Azalea, Nick Young, and even Donald Trump. While his rapping voice is calm and collected, he’s not always as cool. Snoop’s strong opinions cause him to butt heads on the daily.

A Real Life P.I.M.P.

It’s one thing to sing about certain topics, and it’s another to actually live it out. Rappers are known to sing about some eyebrow-raising issues, like prostitution, guns, drugs, and the likes. But for some, like Snoop, those songs aren’t just made-up lyrics.

Apparently, the rapper was an actual pimp from 2003 to 2004. He admitted: “(Pimping) was my natural calling and once I got involved with it, it became fun. It was like shootin’ layups for me. I was makin’ em every time.”

Rapping With Tupac Shakur

In 1996, Snoop Dogg and the late Tupac Shakur collaborated in one of Tupac’s last songs – 2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted. Tupac’s stern voice and Snoop Dogg’s chill tone take the listener on an interesting journey with the powerful lyrics.

2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted peaked at No. 46 on America’s Billboard Hot R&B and Hip-Hop chart. In September of that same year, 1996, Tupac was gunned down in Las Vegas. Tragically, he died from his wounds six days later.

Triple Ancestry!

Some say that ancestry DNA kits are silly and phony, while others truly believe it’s a worthy test to get. Regardless of whether you believe in DNA testing or not, one of the most intriguing facts about Snoop Dogg is the results he got after taking one himself.

As it turns out, he has triple ancestry! The results of his test were revealed by George Lopez on his show Lopez Tonight back in 2010. After purchasing a DNA kit, it was discovered that the rapper was 71% African, 23% Native American, and 6% European.

Allegations of Cultural Appropriation

Following Snoop Dogg’s much-covered three-week visit to Jamaica, and his conversion to Rastafarianism at a Nyabinghi shrine, the rapper was given some hate for allegedly defrauding the Rastafari culture. The accuser? Bunny Wailer.

Bunny Wailer is one of the members of The Wailers, the group that introduced reggae to the world, thanks to the rise of musicians like Bob Marley and Peter Tosh, who were also part of it. So, what made him so upset with Snoop?

He Threatened to Take Legal Action

Apparently, Bunny accused Snoop of taking part in “outright fraudulent use of Rastafari Community’s personalities and symbolism.” So, he threatened to take legal action against the rapper. Snoop was also accused of “failing to meet contractual, moral and verbal commitments” with respect to the Rastafari lifestyle.

“Smoking weed and loving Bob Marley and reggae music is not what defines the Rastafari Indigenous Culture!” Bunny Wailer explained. In Snoop’s defense, the rapper insisted that his beliefs were personal and that he didn’t need anyone’s approval.

One of the Most Decorated Hip Hop Artists in the World

As one of the most influential musicians in the rap game, Snoop Dogg has 27 major awards lying around his villa. The rapper has likely been nominated over 100 times. Snoop has won MTV Awards, BET Awards, the Grammys, and Billboard Hip-Hop Awards.

In addition, he has been inducted into WWE’s Hall of Fame in 2016. He was enshrined in the wrestling hall of fame as a member of their “celebrity wing.” Snoop Dogg has gifted the ring with a lot of precious moments, like beating Chavo Guerrero in one amusing segment.

Featured in Over 20 Films

One of the most incredible facts about Snoop Dogg is that he’s starred in over 30 films. Even though he isn’t considered an actor, he’s still shown some great skills on TV. Many remember him for his role in Half Baked as the character Scavenger Smoker.

Other notable appearances include the movie Soul Plane as Captain Antoine Mack, The Bing Bang as Puss, Ja’Marcus in Scary Movie 5, a part in Pitch Perfect 2 as himself, and Future World as the one and only Love Lord.

The Oldest of the Bunch – Cordé Broadus

Let’s take a look at Snoop’s kids, starting with Cordé Broadus, the oldest of his three children with his wife Shante. Born on August 21, 1994, Cordé is a proud father himself. He has three children, turning Snoop Dogg into a full-time grandpa!

He has a daughter named Ellevena and a baby boy named Skylar, both with his wife Soraya. But Cordé also has another son named Zion whom he raises with his previous partner. But that’s not all…

An Inspiration for “Those Whose Light Is Dim”

Apart from his three kids, Cordé used to have another son with Soraya, named Kai. However, after ten brief days in the world, in the fall of 2019, their infant tragically passed away. He died in the loving arms of his dad.

“He died in my arms and that feeling of energy will never leave me. Kai wants all of you to know he’s doing great and wants to continue to inspire those whose light is dim,” Cordé wrote in a heart-wrenching Instagram post in the fall of 2019.

The Second Oldest – Cordell Broadus

Cordell Broadus was born several years after Cordé, on February 21, 1997, making him the second of Snoop Dogg’s four kids. Cordell grew up to be a towering six-foot-three athlete, who took on football at UCLA as a wide receiver.

These days, however, you can catch Cordell posing on editorial spreads in Vanity Fair or taking snapshots for luxurious Ralph Lauren campaigns. The young man is working hard to build his modeling portfolio. He’s also a father of two, Cordoba and Chateau, whom he raises with his wife Phia.

The Third of the Bunch – Julian Broadus

Julian Broadus is Snoop Dogg’s third child, and unlike his other kids, Julian’s mom is Snoop’s previous partner, Laurie Holmand. He was born on June 18, 1998, and today, he lives in LA and is doing tremendously well building his profession as a real estate agent.

When he’s not out there scouting for Hollywood’s elite luxury homes, Julian can be found hanging out with friends or uploading stylish photos to his social media accounts. Like his brothers, Julian is also an athlete, having played basketball at school and in different organizations, among them, Kobe Bryant‘s Mamba Sports Academy.

The Youngest of the Bunch – Cori Broadus

Last but not least is Snoop’s youngest, Cori Broadus. As his only daughter, Cori is definitely daddy’s little princess. The two have an incredible relationship, and the world caught a glimpse of it when she joined her dad on his journey to create a reggae-inspired album.

Cori explored her passion for music by providing vocals on her dad’s 2012 record. Ever since her love for music has grown, and this up-and-coming musician now has songs available for listening on Spotify, YouTube, and Apple Music.

Her Mental Health Deteriorated

In the spring of 2021, Snoop’s daughter Cori uploaded a startling post on Instagram, confessing that she had recently hit such a low point in her personal life that she actually began contemplating suicide. She wrote:

“The last few weeks my mental has not been so great, at one point I tried to end my life, but you & my family really give me a purpose to live & helped me realize Iife is much more than materialistic things & you gotta just keep pushing through the bulls—t.”

He Didn’t Invent the Izzle

Snoop Dogg started spitting some interesting make-believe words back in 2001 that have completely stuck with mainstream society. They’ve become a part of the rapper’s identity! For example, “fo shizzle my nizzle,” a slang which many believe he came up with.

But this lingo wasn’t actually created by Snoop. He simply popularized it by using it in his songs and during interviews. However, the “izzle” at the end of a word was being used long before Snoop added it to his vocab.

He’s a Huge Advocate of Medicinal Marijuana

It seems like Snoop Dogg’s whole identity has formed around his passion for medicinal marijuana. The rapper was among the first celebs to ever speak publicly about their marijuana usage. Today, he unapologetically continues to promote his usage time and again.

Snoop has taken his love of medicinal marijuana and turned it into a business. Through his stock investments in Leafs by Snoop and CannaVerde Pharma, the rapper has earned quite a profit, and he is still very involved in both brands.

Who Is Snoop’s Wife?

Shante Broadus, Snoop Dogg’s high school sweetheart, was born in California in 1971. She studied at Long Beach Polytechnic High School, and in the school halls, she met a lanky guy named Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr.— soon to become Snoop Dogg.

Shante is both an entrepreneur and businesswoman, and when Snoop Dogg first became famous, she was his manager. She went on to create Boss Lady Entertainment, a music management company that has also worked on several movies and television projects.

They Dated for Four Months Before They Kissed

Back in the ’80s, Snoop Dogg and Shante were young and naïve high school sweethearts. Looking back, the rapper said it wasn’t easy wooing her. He explained: “I had to go over there and meet her mother. I had to go over there and date her for, like, four months before I was able to kiss her. I had to call her on the phone. I had to write love letters. I had to do all of that kind of… you know what I’m saying, to win her over.”

Luckily, Snoop’s persistence paid off and the lovebirds got married on June 14th, 1997. Even though they’re still happily married, the pair experienced a few hurdles along their road of marriage bliss.

They Married Twice

When Snoop and Shante married, they already had a four-year-old son named Cordé. Four months after tying the knot, Shante gave birth to their second son, Cordell. In 1999, they had their third bundle of joy, a baby girl named Cori.

But, as mentioned before, Snoop also has a son named Julian Corrie Broadus, who came as a result of an extramarital affair he had in the late ’90s. Clearly, things weren’t going very well in the Broadus household, and as the rapper’s star continued to rise, his relationship with Shante took a blow.

When Things Get Cloudy

The pair was on the verge of divorce. “A lot of times you get cloudy,” Snoop Dogg explained, “This music industry is a mother, man, and it’ll take your vision and blur it.” Fortunately, the rapper quickly came to his senses and ran right back to Shante’s arms.

“I understand that I need my wife and my kids in my life—so I threw the papers away. I don’t want to get a divorce. So, if you hear about a divorce, it’ll be my wife divorcing me. It won’t be me divorcing her…And I made a mistake, so I’m trying to get back right.”

How Did He Win Her Back?

So how did the award-winning rapper win back his one true love? “A whole lot of begging and pleading,” Snoop admitted in an interview he did with Larry King. “It was up to me to try to put it back together because I’m the one who said I didn’t want to be a part of it no more.”

He added, “It’s hard now to this day. It’s still hard because there’s a lot of, you know—there’s a lot of roller coaster to a relationship.” Despite all of the bumps on the way, these two have clearly learned how to make things work. They’ve been married now for over two decades!

His Daughter Saved Their Marriage

Snoop Dog revealed that his daughter’s health issues helped draw him closer to Shante again. In 2005, when she was just six years old, Cori was diagnosed with lupus, a chronic health condition that creates inflammation and aches in many parts of the body.

“My daughter is the love of my life,” Snoop told People back in 2010. “When she’d lay in bed saying, ‘My brain hurts’, it bothered me so much. I felt helpless… But she’s the toughest little thing I’ve ever met, even with the needles.”

They Renewed Their Vows

“Without [Snoop], I don’t know what I’d have done,” Shante told People magazine. “It’s amazing how this all turned out. We were going to get a divorce. But we wouldn’t have gotten through it [Cori’s lupus diagnosis] that way.”

Thankfully, their daughter’s health condition slowly improved, and in 2008, Snoop Dogg and his sweetheart Shante renewed their wedding vows in a private celebration with a few loved ones. We’re glad they have managed to stick it out all these years!

Celina Powell

In the spring of 2020, Instagram model Celina Powell took to the internet and claimed something a tad scandalous. She said she had had an affair with Snoop. It all began when Hitman Holla was reportedly exposed on Instagram for cheating on his girlfriend (it was actually just a prank).

Then, a model named Kai Bleu shared photos of her and Hitman Holla in what looked like a hotel bathroom, and Snoop left a comment: “That’s a cheap shower curtain. What hotel is that? I mean motel.” Powell then responded, “The same one you took me to.”

An Old YouTube Video Surfaced

This wasn’t the first time Powell claimed she had spent time with the rapper. An old YouTube video shows Celina saying that she had hooked up with him several times back in 2018. She even said that he had once flown her out to see him.

Afterward, Shante posted an Instagram post about disappointment. “U ever watch somebody u love turn into somebody u don’t know,” she wrote, captioning the image with “Where Did We Go Wrong[?]”

“A Clout Chaser”

In response, Snoop Dogg didn’t say much on the matter. He only called Powell a “clout chaser.” He did, however, post a tribute to his wife on Instagram: “@bosslady_ent. Thanks 4 the Kids loyalty stability n the ability to deal wit me on my worst days… u are appreciated.”

Then, Powell shared on Instagram Stories a snapshot of Snoop Dogg seemingly getting pampered by her. He allegedly took the picture. “If this man don’t hurry up,” the caption jokily read.

It Didn’t End There

Celina Powell then bragged about Snoop Dogg getting back with her. “Snoop Dogg isn’t leaving me lol no matter what I do sis!” the Instagram model wrote in the caption. She knew she was going to get heat from fans, so she mentioned that the rapped had allegedly separated from Shante.

Before anyone could accuse her of being a homewrecker, she added: “FYI, him & his girl are separated living in different houses.” She went on to expose the affair she allegedly had with him, saying that the two had sex while listening to his album “Bible of Love.”

Snoop Dogg Flipped the Script

Furious with her audacity, Snoop Dogg flipped the script, claiming that she had been nothing more than meaningless bait for his new show “Clout Chasers.” Then, he threw a subtle shade at Celina in the apology song “Don’t Be Mad at Me.”

In the song, he raps: “I’m tired of sayin’ sorry for the same s**t/ Damn near lost my queen, f**king ’round with that lame b***h. Ashamed of myself ’cause I shamed you/ Good or bad, right or wrong, we always bang through.”
