Besides flannel shirts and fanny packs, the ‘90s birthed another fashionable trend: the iconic celebrity couple. Among the famous couples splashed across the tabloids, no duo emerged from the decade quite like Lenny Kravitz and Lisa Bonet. Although the couple’s marriage may not have worked out, they remained close friends because of their daughter Zoë.
Fast forward to today, and the Kravitz-Bonet-Momoa family is the definition of a blended, modern family. So why exactly did Lenny and Lisa split? To whom has he been linked since? And how did he handle his ex-wife remarrying? From alleged affairs to secret engagements and meet-cutes with hunky Hollywood actors, this is the Kravitz family.
Born in 1964, Lenny Kravitz is the only child of Sy Kravitz and Roxie Roker. As a biracial child in an interfaith marriage in the ‘60s, Lenny was the target of several prejudicial remarks. The singer was no stranger to the entertainment industry. His father, Sy, is a TV producer and his mother Roxie played Helen Willis on the widely popular sitcom The Jeffersons.
When the Kravitz family moved to Hollywood for Roxie’s acting career, Lenny fell in love with music. He quickly joined the California Boys Choir and learned to play several different instruments on the side. After graduating from high school in 1982, Lenny hit the road running. Going by the name “Romeo Blue,” Lenny tried to make it in the music industry.
Making It on His Own
Although his parents had several Hollywood connections, Lenny was determined to succeed as a musician independently. He lived out of a rented car, which cost him $5 a day. Although his situation wasn’t ideal, Lenny’s parents and grandparents encouraged the singer to follow his own path. “You don’t always get that from your elders,” he told Men’s Health in 2014.
“Elders are always trying to tell you how to be, what to be. But my grandfather, for instance, always encouraged me to be myself.” Still struggling to find his big break, Lenny moved to New York City. Little did he know that this move would change his personal life forever.
Love at First Sight
Lenny first met Lisa Bonet in a backstage elevator during a New Edition concert in 1985. At the time, Lenny was still a struggling musician while Lisa was a bonafide star for her role as Denise Huxtable on The Cosby Show. The two hit it off instantly. “She was like a female version of me,” the singer told Rolling Stone magazine in 1995.
“That woman inspired me so much. It was a magical time that she and I shared. I just opened up artistically.” Although there were instant sparks, the former couple says that the first two years of their relationship remained platonic. Lenny was busy jump-starting his career, and Lisa was focused on breaking out of her squeaky-clean image.
Good Girl Gone Bad
However, everything seemed to fall into place for Lenny and Lisa in 1987. After being cast as Epiphany Proudfoot in the horror film Angel Heart, Lisa posed topless for Interview magazine. The Cosby Show fans were outraged, but Lisa, on the other hand, was thrilled to step away from the wholesome image that she built on the sitcom.
“My obligation wasn’t to Denise. I felt obligated to myself and my career,” she later told reporters. At around this time, Lisa was rumored to be butting heads with Bill Cosby about the direction of the show and coming into work late, but little did he know that Lisa had more surprises in store.
Finding His Footing
That same year, Kravitz moved in to Lisa’s New York City apartment, and their whirlwind romance began. The couple eloped to Las Vegas on November 16th, which also happened to be Lisa’s 20th birthday. Lenny soon found himself in the tabloids as “Mr. Bonet.” The singer didn’t care. He was too busy exploring his musical talents and collaborating with his new wife.
“Watching her do what she did, how she maneuvered, in her artistic life—it was that last thing I needed, on this road,” Lenny said of his relationship. “This sound, this message, this movement that I was looking for—I heard it in my head.” Lisa went on to co-write two tracks, Rosemary and Fear, for his debut album, Let Love Rule.
However, it wasn’t just music that connected the two. It was also their similar upbringing. Like Lenny, Lisa was the child of interracial, interfaith marriage in the ‘60s. Lisa also says that she didn’t feel welcomed or safe as a child in a world that wasn’t ready for her existence. However, when the actress first told Lenny that her mother was white and Jewish and her father was Black, Lenny smiled and explained his own upbringing.
It was an unusual coincidence, but Lisa says that it was also enchanting. “I felt like, ‘Okay, here’s someone who really knows how it is,’ the actress later told reporters. “And I think I trusted him a little more with my feelings and let him inside a little more than I ordinarily would have.”
More Surprises in Store
Then in 1988, Lisa found out that she was pregnant with the couple’s first and only child, Zoë. The couple was thrilled, but Lisa’s employers were not. By now, Lisa was working on A Different World, which was a Cosby Show spinoff series. Her character Denise was off to college, and Bill Cosby refused to write Lisa’s pregnancy into the show, even though the show’s producers liked the idea.
“Lisa Bonet is pregnant, but Denise Huxtable is not,” the disgraced comedian reportedly told her. So, after one season, Lisa was fired. Due to popular demand, she was later asked to reprise her role as Denise on The Cosby Show, but her screen time remained minimal.
All Good Things Come to an End
The actress’s final appearance on the show was in 1991, with Cosby later claiming that Bonet was fired because she outgrew the show’s material. Lisa’s run on The Cosby Show wasn’t the only thing that came to an end that year. After four years together, Lenny and Lisa went their separate ways.
“I think I just wasn’t ready,” Lenny told reporters in 2014. “I had to take a break. I went through a lot of emotional things, a lot of deaths in my family.” However, the break wasn’t as easy as Lenny thought it would be. For six months after the breakup, the singer says that he only slept two hours a day, from four in the morning until six.
Warning: Trouble Ahead
It wasn’t just Lenny who had a hard time after the couple broke up. With the end of her squeaky-clean image as Denise Huxtable, her divorce, and a new baby, Lisa had to find her own way again. Following the pair’s divorce in 1993, Lisa officially changed her name to Lilakoi Moon in an attempt to distance herself from her past.
Although Lisa claimed that she wasn’t going to work in the industry for the next decade, she still made a few onscreen appearances. She had supporting roles in the 1998 film Enemy of the State and the 2000 comedy High Fidelity. But, for the most part, Lisa stayed out of the spotlight.
Mr. Bonet No More
Lenny’s career, on the other hand, was finally taking off. He was no longer Mr. Bonet or Romeo Blue. He reclaimed his identity and was now known as Lenny Kravitz. “When I finally did accept myself for myself, music started flowing out of me,” the singer told reporters in 1989.
After the 1989 release of his debut album Let Love In, the singer produced Madonna’s 1990 Justify My Love, which further launched him into the spotlight. Lenny and the Queen of Pop worked together in the year leading up to his separation from Lisa, leading tabloids to believe the two had an affair. Lenny, however, denied cheating on his wife, remaining adamant that his relationship with Madonna was strictly professional.
Moving on Up
After his divorce, Lenny released his sophomore album Mama Said. The album reached Billboard’s Top 40, solidifying his career as a rockstar. In the following years, Lenny released album after album, raking up a repertoire of greatest hits. In 2000, the singer released these greatest hits as one album, which not only sold 11 million copies worldwide but became the most commercially successful album of the decade. Lenny finally made it.
With his successful career came the ladies. Following his separation from Lisa, Lenny dated French actress and singer Vanessa Paradis. The two met in 1991 while Lenny was producing Vanessa’s self-titled album. However, the two broke up after four years together. Vanessa moved on with actor Johnny Depp, with whom she has two kids.
Surrounded by Supermodels
Lenny didn’t find love again until 2001 when he started dating the Brazilian supermodel and former Victoria’s Secret Angel, Adriana Lima. Within a year, the couple was already living together and engaged. While Lenny was obviously happy with the arrangement, his daughter Zoë had some trouble with it.
“I went through a really awkward phase. I was short and brown, surrounded by tall girls with boobs and blonde hair,” the now-31-year-old explained. “And my dad was dating supermodels, so I was waking up to Adriana Lima. I didn’t have beauty as a crutch, and I’m thankful for that because I had to develop my personality.” But the relationship didn’t last long. In April 2003, the engagement was called off, and Lenny was back on the market.
A Secret Engagement
A few months later, Lenny met and fell in love with actress Nicole Kidman. The pair tried hard to keep their relationship under wraps, so it is unclear how they exactly met. According to People magazine, Lenny was Nicole’s landlord back in 2002, so maybe that’s a clue? The two quickly became engaged but eventually called it quits in 2004.
“It just wasn’t right. I wasn’t ready. We weren’t ready,” the actress said back in 2007. “I get engaged, and I get married, that’s my thing. I don’t want to date. I’m interested in a very, very deep connection.” Coincidentally, Nicole and Zoë began working together on the HBO series Big Little Lies in 2017. Luckily, the exes remained on good terms!
Hello, Jason Momoa
A year after Lenny split from Nicole, his ex-wife Lisa finally met the love of her life: Jason Momoa. When the Aquaman actor first laid eyes on his future wife, it was love at first sight. Well, more of a manifestation that finally came true.
Along with the rest of America in the ‘80s, Jason tuned in every week to watch Lisa play Denise on the Cosby Show. Even though he was just a kid, he was instantly smitten. “Ever since I was like, eight years old and I saw her on the TV, I was like, ‘Mommy, I want that one,’” Jason famously said on The Late Late Show in 2017.
The Perfect Meet-Cute
As we all know, the actor finally won over his dream girl, but he didn’t tell her about his childhood crush until the pair had been together for a few years. Jason says that he didn’t want to creep her out, but he does admit that he always wanted to meet her. So how did the pair meet? One night, a mutual friend introduced Jason and Lisa at a New York City jazz club.
“We just happened to be in the right place at the right time,” he told James Corden. Jason was ecstatic, to say the least, but tried his best to play it cool. The actor eventually convinced Lisa to go out for beers at a bar nearby, and the rest is history. “We sat down, she ordered a Guinness, and that was it,” he said.
A Deep Love
Lisa also says that sparks were flying from the moment she first saw the 6-foot-4 Game of Thrones hunk. “In that moment, love came, and it came big, and he did not run as I think a lot of men do,” the actress later recalled in 2018. When the pair first met, Jason was still relatively unknown and living out of a hotel in New York.
The Hawaiian actor was first discovered in 1998 and worked as a model before appearing in the drama series Baywatch Hawaii from 1999 until 2001. He eventually scored a supporting role on the show Stargate: Atlantis, but according to Jason, it wasn’t until an accident that left him with 140 stitches to his face that he began to land bigger roles.
An Unexpected Assault
The story is way more interesting than an action stunt gone wrong or a surfing accident. Back in November 2008, a guy named Dominic Bando smashed a pint glass in Jason’s face while he sat at the Bird Cafe in Hollywood. According to Jason, the attack may have been part of a gang initiation, especially given Jason’s size.
The assailant was charged with assault with a deadly weapon and was eventually sent to prison for five years. Jason not only needed 140 stitches across his face but later required reconstructive surgery to patch up the scar. Today, Jason has a permanent slash scar across his face, but he credits it for helping with his bada** image. “I got called ‘pretty boy’ my whole life,” the actor said in 2011. “If anything, it’s like, good. It’s not my thing now.”
Jason’s Breakout Role
A few years later, Jason finally landed the role of a lifetime as Khal Drogo on Game of Thrones. For his audition, he performed a Haka, a traditional ancestral war cry used by the Māori people of New Zealand. Jason later revealed that the Dothraki warlord’s lack of dialogue inspired him to perform the dance before his audition.
“It was challenging to do the audition afterward. I couldn’t stop my heart from beating,” Jason told The New York Times. “The first time I did it, they were very scared.” We can imagine. The audition won over the show’s producers and officially launched Jason into the spotlight. Fans obviously fell in love with the actor and were disappointed to learn that his heart was already taken.
A Secret Wedding
Although rumor had it that Jason and Lisa tied the knot in 2007 after welcoming their first daughter, they didn’t officially get hitched until 2017. The low-key ceremony took place at their home in California. It is rumored that Jason performed the haka for Lisa, but other than that, not much is known about their special day.
“I thought it would have stayed [a secret], but some a**hole leaked it, and I will find you,” Jason later told Entertainment Tonight. Everyone was in attendance, including the couple’s two children, 13-year-old Lola and 12-year-old Nakoa-Wolf, as well as Zoë and Lenny. Surprisingly, Lenny has a healthy relationship with both his ex-wife and her second husband.
Best Friends at First Sight?
For years, people have wondered how they do it. “People can’t believe how tight Jason and I are, or how tight I still am with Zoë’s mom, how we all relate,” Lenny told reporters in 2020. “We just do it because that’s what you do. You let love rule, right?” According to the singer, he and Lisa worked hard on their relationship, especially because they share a daughter.
After much-needed healing and reflection, Lenny and Lisa were able to move past their differences and become really good friends. As for Jason and Lenny, the singer said that the two hit it off right away. “Literally the moment we met, we were like, ‘Oh, yeah. I love this dude.’” Zoë also has a lot of love for her stepfather.
Like Stepfather, Like Stepdaughter
Zoë first met Jason when she was in high school, and, according to Rolling Stone magazine, the actor somehow ended up drinking beers with her and her friends. The two have grown close over the years and even have matching tattoos on their arms. The tattoos read “être toujours ivre,” which means “always be drunk” in French.
The two have made countless red-carpet appearances together and even presented the Golden Globe for Best Actress in January 2020. Zoë is known to call Jason “papa bear,” and the two frequently make shoutouts to one another on Instagram. It’s nice to see how much love this family has for each other. Zoë is also very close to her parents.
Dabbling in the Arts
Growing up, Zoë had a close connection with both of her parents. Following Lisa and Lenny’s separation in 1991, the actress lived with her mother in Topanga Canyon before moving to be with her father in Miami when she was 11 years old. Lenny says that his own mother and grandfather were extremely close.
“So, when I see the relationship between Zoë and myself, I see the relationship between my mother and my grandfather,” Lenny told reporters in 2020. “It makes me very happy that we’ve elevated to that level.” Like her father, Zoë also has a love for music. She began making music at the age of 16 and most recently collaborated with drummer Jimmy Giannopoulos to form the electropop R&B duo Lolawolf, which was named after Zoë’s younger siblings.
Blood, Sweat, and Tears
As the daughter of an ‘80s sitcom queen, Zoë has also tried her hand at acting. In 2015, the now 31-year-old starred in Mad Max: Fury Road, alongside Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy. Although her part was small, the film definitely put Zoë’s name on the map. While the actress is thankful for her role as Toast the Knowing, she says that the film was very challenging.
With the high wind, sandstorms and extreme temperatures, filming was often delayed, and the cast suffered. “It really felt like we put our actual blood, sweat, tears, and time into it, and if it hadn’t been good, I would have been devastated,” Zoë said of the film.
Joining the DC World
Following the success of Mad Max, Zoë landed the role of Bonnie Carlson in the HBO series Big Little Lies alongside her father’s ex-fiancé Nicole Kidman. She then went on to star in the Hulu remake of High Fidelity, in which her mother coincidentally had a small role in the original 2000 film. Unfortunately, the show was canceled after one season.
Maybe it was for the best, seeing that Zoë was most recently cast as Catwoman alongside Robert Pattinson in The Batman, which is slated to premiere in 2022. Zoë said that she has been training hard for the physical role, which she hopes fans will love. But while the actress seems to be on the top of the world today, Zoë says that her road to stardom wasn’t always easy.
The Trouble with Her Weight
Growing up, Zoë felt pressure from the world of Hollywood fame and glamour. Not only was her mom Lisa Bonet, but her dad dated one beautiful supermodel woman after another. “I was a chunky, perfectly normal-looking 15-year-old, but I had this remarkably beautiful, skinny mother and a father who was dating a supermodel, and I felt short and ungainly.”
Not only did she not feel at home in her own home, but she had trouble fitting in at school, which caused even more problems. Zoë soon became obsessed with her weight, developing an eating disorder which she battled for almost a decade. Luckily, she began therapy after moving to New York City, which helped her overcome the illness.
She Met Her Match
Zoë briefly dated actor Ezra Miller before moving on with Gossip Girl actor Penn Badgley. The pair dated for nearly two years before calling it quits in 2013 to focus on their careers. Then three years later, she met her future husband, actor Karl Glusman. It was actually a mutual friend who introduced the two while they were out with a bunch of friends.
When Karl met Zoë for the first time, he was too nervous to talk to her and stuck up a conversation with a blonde girl sitting on his other side. Luckily, Karl calmed his nerves and picked the conversation back up later on that night. The couple hit it off and have been inseparable ever since.
A Proposal in Sweats
After dating for a year and a half, Karl finally popped the question. He initially wanted to propose to Zoë in Paris, but when work commitments messed up his plans, Karl decided to ask her to marry him while standing in their living room. “I was in sweatpants,” Zoë told Rolling Stone magazine. “I think I was a little drunk.”
“I could feel his heart beating so fast — I was like, ‘Baby, are you okay?’ I was actually worried about him!” The couple kept their engagement under wraps for a few months before Zoë shared the news in 2018. The couple kept most of their June 2019 wedding plans a secret, but, lucky for us, Zoë shared nearly her entire wedding album a few months later.
A Dream Wedding
The pair tied the knot in Lenny’s 18th century Paris mansion, surrounded by family and friends. Of course, her stepdad Jason and her little siblings were in attendance, as well as her Big Little Lies costars and several other celebrities. The ceremony took place on the sweeping stairs inside the three-story townhouse. Before descending to meet her husband to be, Zoë paused to hug her family.
Jason wore an all-white suit and Birkenstock sandals, Lenny was in a black suit and untied bowtie, and Zoë looked gorgeous in a ballerina-esque Alexander Wang dress, a headband, and flats. The ceremony was the perfect celebration for one of Hollywood’s most down-to-earth couples and their families. Unfortunately, the pair have since split, with Zoë filing for divorce in December 2020, after 18 months of marriage! It looks like she’s not the only one who hasn’t found her happily ever after…
Finding Peace in the Bahamas
Lenny was most recently linked to Brazilian model Barbara Fialho after being photographed holding hands with her. However, nothing seems to have come of the relationship, and Lenny is reportedly still single. In recent years, the singer has taken time to develop his acting career and has landed supporting roles in films such as Precious and The Hunger Games.
He currently splits his time between his house in Beverly Hills and Eleuthera in the Bahamas. Lenny first fell in love with the island after a trip he took with his ex-wife. “It’s the place I go to be myself,” the singer said in 2019. “I am a local in the Bahamas. They are aware of what I do, but they don’t care about that. That’s what’s beautiful.”
